This program will explore two cultures that, for Americans, have been largely inaccessible and misunderstood throughout modern history. Being in-country students will gain a better understanding of Cuba’s and Russia’s own perspectives on their histories and positions in the world today. A combination of lectures, excursions and language study will allow students to immerse themselves in local culture. The course will also examine the role and instruments of cultural diplomacy by looking at a number of case studies, both current and historic. Language study (both Spanish and Russian) is a critical component of the program as it helps foster understanding of a society’s worldview.
