She examines how texts, both written and performed, have helped terrorized communities survive and thrive. Her study\u00a0<a class=\"ContentPasted0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/books\/catalog\/32xhk5kq9780252036491.html\" title=\"Living with Lynching Website\"><em>Living with Lynching: African American Lynching Plays, Performance, and Citizenship, 1890-1930\u00a0<\/em><\/a>(University of Illinois Press, 2011) won book awards from the American Theatre and Drama Society and from the Society for the Study of American Women Writers. Her essay \u201cJames Baldwin, Performance Theorist, Sings the\u00a0<em>Blues for Mister Charlie<\/em>\u201d appears in the March 2012 issue of\u00a0<em>American Quarterly,\u00a0<\/em>and her<em>\u00a0Callaloo\u00a0<\/em>journal article &#8220;Love in Action&#8221; identifies similarities between racial violence at the last turn of the century and anti-LGBT violence today. Her second monograph,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.uillinois.edu\/books\/?id=c043321\" title=\"From Slave Cabins to the White House website\">From Slave Cabins to the White House: Homemade Citizenship in African American Culture<\/a><\/em>, appeared in 2020, was named a best book of the year by<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Ms.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>magazine and<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Black Perspectives,<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and became a<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>CHOICE<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Outstanding Academic Title in 2021. Mitchell is also editor of a scholarly edition of Frances E. W.
