My scholarly work in European Renaissance literature ultimately focused \u00a0on age studies or \u201cliterary gerontology\u201d: how old age was understood, misunderstood, and depicted in early modernity, amid the intergenerational politics that shaped period attitudes. I published my initial work on the subject in\u00a0<\/span>Constituting Old Age in Early Modern English Literature, from Queen Elizabeth<\/i>\u00a0to King Lear. That book contested traditional presumptions that late life was then dismissed as little more than a time of withdrawal and preparation for death, through close rereading of such Elizabethan authors as Spenser, Sidney, Ralegh, Shakespeare, Donne, and the queen herself. I have since then edited and contributed to Bloomsbury\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Cultural History of Old Age in the Early Modern Era (1400-1650)<\/i>\u2014a project I developed during a faculty residency at the University of Padua in the spring of 2018\u2014scheduled for release in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n
