The English Department is pleased to be able to offer various student awards and fellowships throughout the year to both our undergraduate and graduate student populations.
We are fortunate to have some wonderful donors who have made it possible to offer the following on a yearly basis:
- · The George & Helen Christopher Fellowship provides dissertation completion support to graduate students in English. Information about how to apply is distributed by email in January, and the departmental Graduate Committee evaluates applications.
- · The Breed-Baryd Fellowship provides dissertation completion support to graduate students focused on the study and teaching of American Literature. Information about how to apply is distributed by email in January, and the departmental Graduate Committee evaluates applications.
- · The Millward Award is given to the best prospectus submitted by an English Graduate Student. Every prospectus is considered for the award by the departmental Graduate Committee.
- · The Albert Gilman Shakespeare Prize, named in honor of, and endowed by, the late Professor Albert Gilman, funds two awards each year, one to an undergraduate, one to a graduate student, for the best paper written on any aspect of Renaissance drama (including non-Shakespearean) broadly defined as English drama 1500-1700. The competition is judged by English Department faculty in the field.
- · The Kearns Prize is the departmental award for a preeminent graduating English major. Seniors are nominated by any English faculty member and finalists are selected by the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Students please watch your inboxes for application information for these and other departmental opportunities throughout the academic year.
