{"id":652,"date":"2019-10-10T22:05:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T02:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/engit\/?page_id=652"},"modified":"2020-07-06T08:47:04","modified_gmt":"2020-07-06T12:47:04","slug":"ntfs-permissions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/engit\/knowledge-base\/ntfs-permissions\/","title":{"rendered":"NTFS Permissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"line874\">To adjust permissions on an folder in Windows (while you&#8217;re logged in as your AD account), right-click on the folder and: <span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-4\"><\/span><span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-5\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"line874\">Choose the &#8220;<strong>Properties<\/strong>&#8221; menu <span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-6\"><\/span><span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-7\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"line874\">Click the &#8220;<strong>Security<\/strong>&#8221; tab <span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-8\"><\/span><span class=\"anchor\" id=\"line-9\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"line874\">Click on a user, and click &#8220;<strong>Edit<\/strong>&#8220;, and checkboxes below will show exactly which permissions they have.<\/li>\n<li class=\"line874\">Choose &#8220;<strong>Add<\/strong>&#8221; to add a new user, or &#8220;<strong>Remove<\/strong>&#8221; to remove a user&#8217;s access. If you are given a permission denied message, then you do not have permission to modify them, and you should contact ENGIT or one of the users listed above who *does* have modify permission, and they can change things for you.<\/li>\n<li><span>Click \u201c<strong>Apply<\/strong>\u201d to apply the permissions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"line874\">If any of the boxes are grayed out, they are being inherited from a folder above, and you can not remove existing permissions without disinheriting the permissions from above. To do this, uncheck the box &#8220;include inheritable permissions from this object&#8217;s parent&#8221;, and choose to copy the permissions from above. (We recommend you avoid doing this on folders that already contain many files, since it can take a very long time for new permissions to propagate.)<\/p>\n<p>When adding a new user, specify their Kerberos name in the window that pops up, and set their permissions by the checkboxes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Full Control<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 User(s) can add, modify, move and delete files and directories, as well as change ownership and permissions settings for all files and subdirectories. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdmarra.com\/2013\/11\/full-control-v-modify-why-you-should-be.html\">In most cases, don&#8217;t set this but use Modify<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Modify<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 Users can view and read and write files and change there properties. Also add and remove files or folders.<\/li>\n<li><strong>List Folder Contents<\/strong> \u2014Users can view and list files and subfolders as well as execute of files.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read<\/strong><strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>&amp; Execute<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 Users can read files and run executable files.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 Users can view files, file properties and directories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 Users can write and edit files and add to folders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Set Permission to Traverse Folders<\/h2>\n<p class=\"line874\">Remember that users will not be able to get to your folder unless they also have permissions to all folders above this one&#8211;this is particularly important to remember in the case of all subfolders under &#8220;BME Administration&#8221;&#8211;if the user is not a member of one of the groups that has permission to &#8220;BME Administration&#8221; (such as &#8220;BME Staff&#8221; or &#8220;BME Labs&#8221;), they will not be able to get to any subfolders, even if you have added them to the subfolder.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To adjust permissions on an folder in Windows (while you&#8217;re logged in as your AD account), right-click on the folder and: Choose the &#8220;Properties&#8221; menu Click the &#8220;Security&#8221; tab Click on a user, and click &#8220;Edit&#8221;, and checkboxes below will show exactly which permissions they have.
