In order to establish a remote connection to a BU computer through RDP, there are a few requirements which are listed below.<\/p>\n

Computer Requirements:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Computer is turned ON and not in ‘Sleep’ mode (we recommend turning this off in the Power Settings menu if it is going to be used remotely)<\/li>\n
  2. Computer is connected to the BU network (preferably this should be via Ethernet to prevent connection issues)<\/li>\n
  3. Computer is running a Windows OS<\/li>\n
  4. Computer is joined to the BU domain (Can check this in Control Panel > System and Security > System and make sure that the Domain is “ad.bu.edu”)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    User requirements:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. You must be connected to the BU network (this can be wired or WiFi). If off campus, you must be using the\u00a0VPN<\/a><\/li>\n
    2. You must be added to the Remote Desktop Users group (if not done previously, this can be requested by sending an email to enghelp@bu.edu that includes the Computer Name – found in the same window as the Domain)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Once all these requirements are met, you can use the appropriate instructions below to create an RDP session on the target computer.<\/p>\n

      Windows<\/h4>
      <\/a><\/p>\n
        \n
      1. Open up up the Remote Desktop Connection application. The easiest way to do this is to search for it in the Start menu.\"\"<\/li>\n
      2. Enter the name of the Computer you are trying to remote to, followed by “.ad.bu.edu<\/strong>“.\u00a0Click Connect<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
      3. A window will pop up, prompting you for credentials. Click More choices<\/strong>, Use a different account<\/strong>, and then OK<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
      4. Enter your BU username with a “AD\\<\/strong>” in front of it, enter your Kerberos Password, check off\u00a0Remember Me<\/strong>, and then hit OK<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
      5. Your RDP session should then start as you log into the computer under your BU username.\"\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Once you are done with your RDP session, you can Sign Out and this will close the window.<\/p>\n

        MacOS<\/h4>
        <\/a><\/p>\n

        The Microsoft Remote Desktop App<\/strong> has been replaced on Mac with the Windows App<\/a>. This will eventially be true on Windows OS too.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. If you do not already have the Microsoft Remote Desktop App, you will need to install it. First, go to the App Store. This can be easily found via Spotlight search.\"\"<\/li>\n
        2. Search for Microsoft Remote Desktop and go to the correct app. Once there, click Get<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        3. Click Install App<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        4. If you are not already signed in, you will be prompted to sign into the App Store with your AppleID.\"\"<\/li>\n
        5. Enter your AppleID and click Sign In<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        6. Enter your password in the new field and click\u00a0Sign In<\/strong> again.\"\"<\/li>\n
        7. After the app installs, open Microsoft Remote Desktop. Once again, this can be found via Spotlight search.\"\"<\/li>\n
        8. On the home screen of the app, click the +<\/strong> and then Add PC<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        9. In the popup window, enter the name of the Computer you are trying to connect to, followed by “.ad.bu.edu<\/strong>“. Then click Add<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        10. The computer should have been added to your saved PCs. Double click this to open a connection.\"\"<\/li>\n
        11. A window will pop up, prompting you for login information. Enter your BU username\u00a0with a “AD\\<\/strong>” in front of it, as well as your Kerberos Password. Hit Continue<\/strong>.\"\"<\/li>\n
        12. Another popup window will appear to trust the target computer. Hit Continue<\/strong> again.\"\"<\/li>\n
        13. Your RDP session should then start as you log into the computer under your BU username.\"\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Once you are done with your RDP session, you can Sign Out and this will close the window.<\/p>\n

          Linux<\/h4>
          <\/a>
          \nThere are several Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) clients for Linux systems<\/p>\n
            \n
          1. Remmina<\/a> (our recommendation, though all are fine)<\/li>\n
          2. FreeRDP<\/a><\/li>\n
          3. rdesktop<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Contact us you have questions about installing on your distribution.<\/p>\n

            If you want to connect to your Linux system with RDP, you’ll want to install XRDP<\/a>. The standard installation provides an independent desktop for every login, but if you want to connect to the an existing sessions desktop (including the you’ll need to review xrdp-sesadmin<\/b> configuration in\/etc\/xrdp\/xrdp.ini.<\/p>\n

            Also consider RustDesk<\/a>, an Open Source program similar to TeamViewer, runs on Windows, Linux, and MacOS.<\/p>\n
