There\u2019s even an easy opportunity to pitch in yourself, from the comfort of your own device.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Invented Here!: Vote for \u00dcnl\u00fc Nanoparticle Sensor<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/selim-unlu\/\">Distinguished Professor of Engineering<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/selim-unlu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selim \u00dcnl\u00fc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an accomplished innovator, whose work frequently bridges the gap between academic research and practical, commercial applications. Named Boston University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2022\/02\/16\/bus-innovator-of-the-year-uses-history-to-shape-the-future\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 Innovator of the Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and more recently, the recipient of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2025\/ignition-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 Ignition Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00dcnl\u00fc holds 26 patents. One of his most recent, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US20240201084A1\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Patent No. 12,392,721<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, entitled \u201cPixel-diversity nanoparticle detection by interferometric reflectance imaging sensor,\u201d has been selected for recognition at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bipla.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Intellectual Property Law Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BIPLA)\u2019s 15th annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bipla.org\/events\/EventDetails.aspx?id=1988417\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invented Here!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The invention, an imaging system which can be used to detect both synthetic and naturally-occurring biological nanoparticles (BNPs), has significant promise for biomedical applications. This has already been demonstrated in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2025\/02\/11\/rapid-detection-on-a-chip\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study published last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which the technology formed the basis for an optical biosensor designed to rapidly detect the presence of viruses such as mpox.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bipla.org\/events\/EventDetails.aspx?id=1988417\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invented Here!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showcases and celebrates \u201coutstanding science and technology innovations\u201d developed in New England by a locally-residing inventor, with a patent issued within the last five years. You\u2019ll need to do this before the event, scheduled for <\/span><b>Wednesday, March 4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cFirm\u201d Impact Earns Recognition<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost ten years after presenting a paper at the Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium in 2016, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/manuel-egele\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Manuel Egele<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and colleagues <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/acsaconf\/posts\/pfbid02w7DD42qxMEm1e7KMSGiHb9j78cBVWGBzrpqNE1iRZmhG3vRmkriLzaQ7zycxVuwkl?rdid=b7XMUGKyQs0LhqlV#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won first place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 2025 Cybersecurity Artifacts Impact competition at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsac.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual Computer Security Applications Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACSAC) in December. This award specifically recognizes work which has had a meaningful impact on privacy and security research\u2013and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artifact in question, FIRMADYNE, was the first automated dynamic analysis system designed to assess the security of Linux-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices \u201cin a scalable manner\u201d. (Devices such as wireless routers; often the single line of defense between a user\u2019s personal device and the open Internet.) The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/megele.io\/firmadyne-ndss2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which presented FIRMADYNE, \u201cTowards automated dynamic analysis for linux-based embedded firmware,\u201d has been cited 622 times, according to Google Scholar, and has become a common baseline or building block for further research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond purely academic pursuits, FIRMADYNE has also been used and expanded on in the open-source software community, incorporated into a professional training course by security company Attify, and used by a number of Boston University students in classwork and research projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Honored for Editorial Dedication<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer-reviewed journals and publications are the backbone of scientific research; as such, the service of scholar-editors is absolutely crucial to the entire collaborative ecosystem from which technological advancements and discoveries emerge. In recognition of an exemplary term of such service, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/emiliano-dallanese-phd\/\">Professor Emiliano Dall\u2019Anese<\/a> has been awarded Outstanding Associate Editor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IEEE Control Systems Letters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the year 2025. Professor Laura Menini, Editor-in-Chief, commended Professor Dall\u2019Anese on his \u201cgreat commitment and technical rigor\u201d in the performance of work which she called \u201ckey for the reputation of our journal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What She (TED) Talks About, When She Talks About Data Centers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of power-hungry AI data centers on global energy and the environment is a significant and well-publicized issue which the average member of the public can read about regularly in the news media. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/ayse-coskun\/\">Professor Ay\u0219e Coskun<\/a>, Director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CISE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Chief Scientist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emeraldai.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EmeraldAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a leader in the effort not only to mitigate this looming crisis, but to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2025\/07\/01\/transforming-data-centers-into-grid-responsive-powerhouses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn it right on its head<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. EmeraldAI\u2019s mission is to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2025\/07\/01\/transforming-data-centers-into-grid-responsive-powerhouses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transform these AI facilities into assets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which help to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stabilize<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the grid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Coskun gave a talk on this very subject this past October at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tedai-sanfrancisco.ted.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TEDAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in San Francisco.
