{"id":156493,"date":"2024-10-04T15:24:04","date_gmt":"2024-10-04T19:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/?p=156493"},"modified":"2024-10-17T09:16:24","modified_gmt":"2024-10-17T13:16:24","slug":"distinguished-eng-alumni-honored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2024\/10\/04\/distinguished-eng-alumni-honored\/","title":{"rendered":"Distinguished ENG Alumni Honored"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Awards go to bioinformatics pioneer Rhonda Harrison (\u201998, \u201904) and astronaut Bob Hines (\u201997)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Recognizing their impact on their professions and communities, Dean <em>ad interim<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/elise-morgan-ph-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elise Morgan<\/a> conferred the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award on two College of Engineering alumni in a fall ceremony at Boston University\u2019s Robotics and Autonomous Systems Teaching &amp; Innovation Center (RASTIC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRhonda Harrison and Bob Hines exemplify the college\u2019s mission of developing Societal Engineers,\u201d Morgan told an audience of about 100 members of the BU ENG community. \u201cThey have not only excelled in their fields but have also made a profound impact on BU and society as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156497\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/10\/Morgan-and-Harrison-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-156497\" width=\"346\" height=\"293\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Rhonda Harrison (ENG&#8217;98, &#8217;04), left, receives the Distinguished Alumni Award from Dean ad interim Elise Morgan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Harrison (ENG\u201998, \u201904, GRS\u201904) was the first woman and the first Black person to earn a PhD in bioinformatics in the U.S., and she has accomplished a great deal since. Harrison helped to establish the field of multiomics, which has transformed how scientists predict protein-protein interactions and their links to disease. She developed the first fruit fly genetic database and contributed to <span>the ENCODE pilot project, a design for (RNA) microarray technology used widely in industry today<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>At MIT, Harrison worked on AI-guided precision medicine and helped develop technologies that are now widely used in genomics research and drug development. As founder of Biopharmix, she has supported drug discovery teams and continues to drive innovation in biotech.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Harrison\u2019s professional achievements, said Morgan, \u201cShe is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, using her experiences to break barriers and help the next generation overcome the same hurdles. She continues to inspire others by fostering diversity in STEM workplaces and mentoring students.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156498\" style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/10\/Morgan-and-Hines-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-156498\" width=\"401\" height=\"319\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bob Hines (ENG&#8217;97) and Elise Morgan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hines (ENG\u201997) is a NASA astronaut who has orbited the Earth on the International Space Station (ISS). After earning his bachelor\u2019s degree in aerospace engineering from BU, Hines joined the U.S. Air Force, flew 76 combat missions in the Middle East, earned a master\u2019s degree, and became a research pilot, flying test planes such as a C-9 jet modified to fly a parabola.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, NASA accepted Hines into the astronaut program. After five years of rigorous training, he piloted NASA\u2019s SpaceX Crew Dragon craft, with three crewmates aboard, 250 miles up to the ISS. There, the team monitored 250 science experiments in microgravity, robotics, hydroponics, and other fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBob connected with the BU community in a memorable way\u2014broadcasting live from the International Space Station while wearing his BU Terriers jersey,\u201d said Morgan. \u201cBob\u2019s journey from BU to the ISS has undoubtedly sparked new dreams in the next generation of engineers and scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156477\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/10\/Morgan-and-Brady-crop-636x405.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-156477\" width=\"283\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/10\/Morgan-and-Brady-crop-636x405.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/10\/Morgan-and-Brady-crop.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Tye Brady (ENG&#8217;90) and Elise Morgan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the presentation of the awards, Morgan and Tye Brady (ENG\u201990) held a \u201cfireside chat\u201d and Q&amp;A on the future of robotics. Brady is chief technologist at Amazon Robotics and a member of the ENG Dean\u2019s Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees then met with student leaders, who presented posters and answered alums\u2019 questions about their research projects.
