Kennedy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hatched in a ten-year-old\u2019s kitchen and honed in Boston University\u2019s cutting-edge makerspaces, a device that harvests electricity from algae has won first prize in the 2024 Dean\u2019s Imagineering Competition. The contest encourages the ideals of the Societal Engineer by giving students the opportunity to turn original ideas into entrepreneurial products with real-world impact.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Miller became obsessed with microbial fuel cells at age 10, after seeing a simple one in a science fair. \u201cI would regularly trash the family kitchen,\u201d he says, \u201cattempting to make mud or algae batteries.\u201d As a young adult, Miller earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology before returning to the science of renewable energy via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/admissions\/graduate\/leap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Late Entry Accelerated Program<\/a> at BU\u2019s College of Engineering, where he is earning a master\u2019s degree in electrical and computer engineering (ECE).<\/p>\n<p>During a gym workout his first week at BU, Miller struck up conversation with mechanical engineering (ME) junior Gustav Yang. Miller shared his concept for the first microbial fuel cell that would generate electricity directly from algae using cost-effective and non-toxic materials. Before long, Miller and Yang assembled a team including ME junior Rejwan Himel and two CAS juniors, Abigail Hassan (political science) and Mohammed Warde (biology).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_151379\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151379\" style=\"width: 453px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-509x636.jpg\" alt=\"microbial fuel cell\" class=\" wp-image-151379\" width=\"443\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-509x636.jpg 509w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/IMG_0457-crop-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Green Machine harnesses solar power by way of the natural metabolic processes of the microalgae <em>Chlorella vulgaris<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In October, they entered their project, \u201cGreen Machine,\u201d in the Imagineering Competition. Over the course of the academic year, competing teams use machinery and tools in the Binoy K. Singh Imagineering Laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/academics\/teaching-and-innovation\/singh-imagineering-lab-silab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SILab<\/a>), along with a small stipend for additional materials, to design and build original technological solutions to societal problems. Green Machine and other teams also used the Bioengineering &amp; Technology Entrepreneurial Center (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/academics\/teaching-and-innovation\/bioengineering-technology-entrepreneurship-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BTEC<\/a>) to run experiments and garnered support from the Engineering Student Innovation Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project took a tremendous amount of research and time,\u201d says Miller. \u201cIt is an algae microbial fuel cell solar panel, in that it harvests electricity from the sun through photosynthesis and generates electricity by the algae giving off electrons onto the anode through reduction, oxidation and photosynthesis.\u201d The result is an affordable, carbon-negative form of renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Nine teams presented their projects in mid April before a panel of judges consisting of Professor of the Practice Diane Joseph-McCarthy (BME<span>, <\/span><span>Chem<\/span>), Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration Richard Lally, and Professor Thomas Little (ECE, SE).<\/p>\n<p>For their creativity, the quality of their prototype, the functionality of the project and its potential to impact society, the judges awarded the Green Machine team first prize, $3,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will continue developing and perfecting my prototypes in BTEC, upscale them, and make a product that can be used commercially,\u201d says Miller. \u201cMy vision is [that] this technology will be used as home solar panels at a fraction of [today\u2019s] cost; on city buildings to generate electricity in addition to cleaning city air; [as] a huge farm that could be used to power cities; and as a DIY instructional manual that people in remote areas can follow to create their own algae fuel cells to generate electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second prize\u2014$1,500\u2014went to BME juniors Yash Patel, Luca Pungan, and Nikita Vinay Kishan for BreatheRight, a respiratory function monitoring device for asthma patients.<\/p>\n<p>Several teams won $250 awards for best-in-class projects: ME seniors Nathan Sun, Zhonghao Wei, Zizai Ma, Yiming Yu, and Peng Qiu; BME junior Everett Guermont; and ECE first-year students Soud Alkharji, Charlie Van Hook, and Arav Tyagi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_151384\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151384\" style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-636x332.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-151384\" width=\"636\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-636x332.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-1536x801.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/1st-pic-green-machine-2048x1068.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Green Machine team members Jonathan Miller and Abigail Hassan with Imagineering Competition judges Thomas Little, Diane Joseph-McCarthy, and Richard Lally.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a cross-disciplinary team, a LEAP student develops his childhood dream into a promising power source<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2662,"featured_media":151379,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[236,1061,907,908,1000,1058],"tags":[884,886,1203,692],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/151357"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2662"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=151357"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/151357\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":151386,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/151357\/revisions\/151386"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/151379"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=151357"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=151357"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=151357"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
