{"id":151240,"date":"2024-04-18T15:34:50","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T19:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/?p=151240"},"modified":"2024-04-23T13:41:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T17:41:56","slug":"siddharth-ramachandran-joins-ranks-of-aaas-fellows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2024\/04\/18\/siddharth-ramachandran-joins-ranks-of-aaas-fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"Siddharth Ramachandran Joins Ranks of AAAS Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by Lea Rivel<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distinguished Professor of Engineering Siddharth Ramachandran has been elected to the rank of AAAS Fellow, on behalf of the Council of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, the Council carefully elects Fellows with scientifically and socially distinguished undertakings aimed at the advancement of science or its applications. Ramachandran is being honored for \u201cpioneering contributions to the generation, control, and propagation of singular states of light, enabling applications spanning classical and quantum communications, imaging, and high-power lasers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual Fellows Forum will be held in Washington, D.C. on September 21, 2024, along with a gala celebrating the 150th anniversary of the AAAS Fellows program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Named a Distinguished Professor of Engineering in 2022, Ramachandran\u2019s research centers on nonlinear, ultrafast and quantum photonics, fibers and guided-wave devices, brain imaging, classical &amp; quantum networks, and other related topics. Ramachandran, along with industry collaborator Poul Kristensen of OFS Optics and Zelin Ma (ECE PhD \u201823), published a paper last year in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrating their groundbreaking new method for increasing data capacity in optical fibers, a solution with significant implications for tomorrow\u2019s internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"204\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-149596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran-550x550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/02\/ece.faculty.24.ramachandran-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/>Professor Ramachandran is already a Fellow of IEEE, APS, OSA, and SPIE, and in 2019, was named a Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellow by the Department of Defense, the agency\u2019s most prestigious award given to an individual researcher. He served as a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering in 2016, and as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from 2013 to 2015.
