Their goal is to develop applicable models that can be used to control physical phenomena. With el Microbial Integration <\/span>Group, he has shown that it is possible to use genetically engineered microorganisms in electronic and mechanical devices.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His group develops these devices, which natively interface with biology. The d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evices are sensors and actuators with microorganisms that allow the monitoring and acting on changes in people\u2019s b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">odies, plants, livestock and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimenez\u2019s primary appointment is Biomedical Engineering, and his interests include microbial devices, bioelectronic devices, synthetic biology, human health and space travel.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/timothy-oshea-ph-d\/\"><strong>Timothy<\/strong><strong> O\u2019Shea, Assistant Professor (BME, MSE)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1.jpg\" alt=\"Profile Photo of Timothy O'Shea\" width=\"283\" height=\"283\" class=\"alignright wp-image-150723\" title=\"MSE Profile Photo of Timothy O'Shea\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1-550x550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/OShea-Timothy-7_20_-profile-1-600x600-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor O\u2019Shea is on a mission to help his childhood friend, Ben Harvey, who damaged his spinal cord playing rugby. This brought O\u2019Shea to his research and purpose: developing new treatments for brain and spinal cord disorders by engineering glia to perform reparative functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research group, Glia Engineering Lab, uses bioengineering tools to regulate functions of glia to treat these disorders. The Paralyzed Veterans of America Research Foundation has given O\u2019Shea a grant to develop his research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Shea\u2019s primary appointment is in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and his interests include glia engineering, biomaterials, neural engineering, stroke, regenerative medicine and cell transplantation.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/minjung-son\/\"><strong>Minjung Son, Assistant Professor (Chemistry, MSE)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Son researches ultrafast optical spectroscopy and microscopy, which has spectral band-width and time resolution with high-speed detection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1.png\" alt=\"Profile Photo of Minjung Son\" width=\"273\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignright wp-image-150725\" title=\"MSE Profile Photo of Minjung Son\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1-550x550.png 550w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2024\/04\/Son_2021-600x600-1-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Th<\/span>e Son Lab, a series of materials science and biochemical tools are used, such as thermal evaporation, spin coating and chromatography.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of Son\u2019s group deepen their knowledge of physical chemistry, optics, materials science and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biochemistry. They gain experience in design, construction and operation of optical instruments and analysis of spectroscopic data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son\u2019s primary appointment is in the Department of Chemistry, and her interests include controlled nanomaterials, hybrid photonic materials and new photophysical processes.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to our newly appointed faculty members!
