Kleber<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost a year after the appointment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/ioannis-paschalidis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Ioannis Paschalidis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the long-standing collaborative bond between the Institute and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has never been more evident. The vitality of this partnership is reflected in ECE\u2019s strong showing in this year\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/2023\/05\/15\/hariri-announces-2023-fellow-2024-frp-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellows &amp; Focused Research Program Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annually, the Hariri Institute taps a small group of junior faculty and doctoral students for their cohort of fellows, a program intended to provide promising scholars of computing and data science with support and opportunities designed to foster their potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_139126\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-139126\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"149\" class=\"wp-image-139126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1-550x550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/11\/batmanghelich1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-139126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Kayhan Batmanghelich<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assistant Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/kayhan-batmanghelich-ph-d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kayhan Batmanghelich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2023\/01\/23\/the-brain-trusts-newest-additions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the newest members of the ECE faculty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has received a 2023 Junior Faculty Fellow appointment. Batmanghelich\u2019s research aligns well with Hariri\u2019s mission, with its substantial focus on utilizing machine learning to develop applications and methodologies for healthcare. His work to date has been aimed towards addressing lung diseases and neurodegenerative disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_140915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140915\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2023\/06\/ece.news_.23.hariri3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"175\" class=\"wp-image-140915\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-140915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zeying Zhu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECE PhD student <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/zeying-zhu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeying Zhu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been named a\u00a0 2023 Graduate Student Fellow. She numbers among just a handful of graduate students across the College and broader University to be selected, based on her innovative and potentially impactful research into software-based telemetry solutions for high-volume network traffic in software network functions and microservices. Zhu, whose research interests encompass monitoring systems and robust algorithms for data analysis, is advised by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Alan Liu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hariri Institute\u2019s Focused Research Program Awards are designed to support significant faculty-driven team projects with an emphasis on convergent specialties and \u201careas of strategic importance and emerging opportunity.\u201d They provide a launching pad for larger interdisciplinary efforts which may garner additional future funding as they grow and evolve. Each FRP is organized around a series of research \u201cthrusts,\u201d working towards the larger project goals.
