{"id":131216,"date":"2022-10-21T12:35:36","date_gmt":"2022-10-21T16:35:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/?p=131216"},"modified":"2024-02-20T11:58:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T16:58:39","slug":"ramachandran-an-aps-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2022\/10\/21\/ramachandran-an-aps-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramachandran an APS Fellow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Distinguished Professor of Engineering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/siddharth-ramachandran\/\">Siddharth Ramachandran<\/a> (ECE, Physics, MSE) has been named a 2022 Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) for foundational contributions to the study of structured and singular light and their applications.<\/p>\n<p>Ramachandran is a photonics pioneer who designed the first optical fiber capable of transmitting data encoded in light that travels in a corkscrew path. Sending data this way\u2014known as the orbital angular momentum degree of photons\u2014was thought to be impossible until Ramachandran and colleagues demonstrated it in a landmark 2013 <em>Science <\/em>paper. His technology, which he has continued to refine since, promises to boost Internet bandwidth by at least 25 times today\u2019s capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is now clear that his fiber designs will be part of the backbone of tomorrow\u2019s internet,\u201d Ramachandran\u2019s nominator wrote to the APS, adding that Ramachandran has also developed the first all-fiber STED microscope, record (kW) power level sources emitting topologically complex beams, and engineerable optical activity isotropic media.<\/p>\n<p>The APS is the premier organization whose membership spans the physics community worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored and humbled to join the select group of exceptional physicists fortunate enough to be designated a fellow by the prestigious APS,\u201d says Ramachandran, \u201cand I am particularly gratified that APS also endeavors to recognize, in addition to fundamental contributions to the field of physics, achievements that lie at the interface of fundamental and applied science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo by Dana J.
