One of the newest multimillion-dollar firms helping to drive the boom has its roots in a Boston University lab. <a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.bio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Satellite Bio<\/a>\u2014fueled by technology codeveloped by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/christopher-chen-m-d-ph-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU biomedical engineer Christopher Chen<\/a>\u2014launched in April after announcing it had secured $110 million in venture funding.<\/p>\n<p>The company promises to pioneer \u201cthe next frontier of regenerative medicine\u201d by developing tissue implants that can help treat or replace diseased organs. Satellite Bio was cofounded by Chen, a BU William F. Warren Distinguished Professor and a College of Engineering professor of biomedical engineering, and <a href=\"https:\/\/imes.mit.edu\/people\/faculty\/bhatia-sangeeta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sangeeta Bhatia of Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/satellite-bio-craftcms-assets\/Satellite-Bio-Reveals-Pioneering-Tissue-Therapeutics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a> its novel technology, which it calls \u201ctissue therapeutics,\u201d would allow scientists to program cells and aggregate them \u201cinto novel, implantable therapies, called \u2018satellites,\u2019 which can be introduced to patients to repair, restore, or even replace dysfunctional or diseased tissue or organs.\u201d The satellites can either act like a supercharged Band-Aid, helping to speed rehabilitation, or more like a power generator, taking on some of an organ\u2019s typical function to get the body running closer to its optimal level.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read the full story on BU&#8217;s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/satellite-bio-developing-tissue-therapeutics-to-treat-diseased-organs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Brink<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greater Boston has become the nation\u2019s biotech hub\u2014the Silicon Valley of life sciences, according to some\u2014and Massachusetts is now reportedly home to more than 1,000 biotech companies, employing more than 80,000 people.
