The software could pave the way to cures for cancer, as well as solutions in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The team announced their technology, Genome Project-write (or GP-write), in <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/genome-editing-cad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an article in <em>IEEE Spectrum<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112047\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2021\/10\/Densmore-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112047\" width=\"225\" height=\"252\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Doug Densmore (ECE, BME)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWith this CAD program, medical researchers will be able to quickly design hundreds of different genomes with any combination of mutations and send the genetic code to a company that manufactures strings of DNA,\u201d Densmore and colleagues write. \u201cEnabling fast redesign of thousands of variants can only be achieved through automation; at that scale, researchers just might identify the combinations of mutations that are causing genetic diseases,\u201d including cystic fibrosis and most types of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just the beginning.
