Utilizing a novel form of mathematics&#8211;fractional calculus\u2014they are embarking on a 36-month study of equally novel types of miniaturized laser structures, capable of operating efficiently over multiple frequency bands and releasing so-called \u201cphotons on demand.\u201d These structures were initially proposed through a prior publication (Y. Chen, A. Fiorentino, and L. Dal Negro, \u201cA Fractional Diffusion Random Laser.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 9, 8686 [2019]).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2017\/05\/ECE.Faculty.Luca_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55332 alignleft\" width=\"199\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2017\/05\/ECE.Faculty.Luca_.jpg 426w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2017\/05\/ECE.Faculty.Luca_-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2017\/05\/ECE.Faculty.Luca_-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2017\/05\/ECE.Faculty.Luca_-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, titled \u201cCollaborative Research: Engineering fractional photon transport for random laser devices,\u201d is expected to lead to broad practical applications in the future, as part of the next generation of essential nanophotonics devices such as optical sensors for environmental control and medical diagnostics. In addition, the grant will help support student research, as well as outreach to attract more students to the fields of computational science and optical engineering, with a particular focus on underrepresented minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Luca Dal Negro earned his PhD a the University of Trento, Italy, in 2003. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the recipient of several early career awards.
