{"id":105299,"date":"2021-02-24T15:18:19","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T19:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/?p=105299"},"modified":"2024-03-01T15:41:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T20:41:19","slug":"professor-awarded-2-4-million-grant-by-nih","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/2021\/02\/24\/professor-awarded-2-4-million-grant-by-nih\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Cheng Awarded $2.4 Million Grant by NIH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Professor Ji-Xin Cheng awarded huge grant to continue his groundbreaking biomedical research.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>By Caroline Amato<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/ji-xin-cheng\/\">Ji-Xin Cheng<\/a> (ECE, BME, MSE) was awarded a $2.4 million grant by the National Institutes of Health for sensing vulnerable plaque in vivo by an all-optical intravascular ultrasound and photoacoustic catheter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>NIH awards grants for groundbreaking research on the verge of changing medicine. Cheng\u2019s biomedical research on this project is bound to change medicine for the better.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project was developed\u00a0 in hopes of helping\u00a0 with coronary atherosclerosis, which is a major form of cardiovascular disease. Intravascular photoacoustic\/ultrasound <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(IVPA\/US) imaging is an emerging imaging process that helps to detect specific lipids. This localization is instrumental in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-485x636.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"341\" class=\"wp-image-105300 alignright\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-485x636.png 485w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-781x1024.png 781w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-768x1007.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-1171x1536.png 1171w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2021\/02\/tbio.201970006-1562x2048.png 1562w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><span>In the 2020 August issue of <\/span><i><span>Translational Biophotonics<\/span><\/i><span>, Cheng and his team presented a dual-frequency IVPA\/US catheter for highly-sensitive detection and precision localization of lipids. The original dual-mode IVPA\/U<\/span><span>S has many advantages but unfortunately does not provide the same high-resolution imaging as seen in the dual-frequency catheter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The development of the new catheter is a major step in reducing this limitation by using different frequencies for the photoacoustic and ultrasound modalities, respectively. Lippincott Award jointly from the Optical Society of America, Society for Applied Spectroscopy and Coblentz Society, and the 2015 Craver Award from Coblentz Society.
