The first fellowships, named in honor of former Engineering Dean, Ken Lutchen, were established in 2010 through a gift from an anonymous alumnus. The program has grown through additional gifts and now regularly supports approximately 15 fellowships each summer. Each fellowship provides students with $11,000 over the summer to support housing, living and other related expenses (please note that the $11,000 is considered taxable income \u2013 students are advised to consult with a tax professional). Distinguished Summer Research Fellows must work full-time in the lab of an engineering faculty member for at least 10 weeks during the summer and cannot take summer courses.<\/p>\n<p>Students are awarded a fellowship at the time of admission to Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>The application period for Summer 2026 is now closed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Below are videos of the Summer 2025 awardees, outlining the research they completed with the fellowship.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video responsive-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Research Matters.
