All of them, however, are linked by a common thread: the use and control of electromagnetic energy. Almost all information is captured using electromagnetic, electro-optical, bio-electrical, electro-chemical, or electro-mechanical transducers. The first step of developing a cell phone, car\u2019s parking assistance system, or space probe is designing transducers, related electronics, and algorithms to process the captured information. With a degree in electrical engineering, you\u2019ll learn these skills and be prepared to begin a career in a wide range of fields, from robotics to medical imaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-1024x683.jpg);background-position:50% 50%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-124559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-636x424.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/files\/2022\/09\/22-1214-ENGSENIOR-062-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2>A Solid Foundation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an electrical engineering student, you will begin by building a strong foundation in the basics\u2014physical sciences, mathematics, and computer science\u2014all of which are necessary for a successful understanding of engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Theory &amp; Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After establishing a foundation, you will enhance your understanding of the theory and application of electrical engineering through courses designed to help you acquire specific techniques and skills in subject areas such as electrophysics, electronics, signals and systems, and computers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3>Diverse Disciplines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also enroll in technical electives to help you gain a broader understanding of the subfields of electrical engineering, such as communications, signal processing, control systems, solid-state devices, materials, photonics, circuit design, computer systems, and software.&nbsp;Additionally, you will have the opportunity to explore areas of&nbsp;data science and machine learning through a sequence of available courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering (ECE) Department offers specialized concentrations to allow students to complement their undergraduate degrees. Students interested in the impact of energy innovations or green technology can focus on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/academics\/explore-degree-programs\/concentration-in-energy-technologies-and-sustainability\/\">Energy Technologies<\/a>&nbsp;and Environmental Engineering. Students can also concentrate on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/academics\/explore-degree-programs\/concentration-in-nanotechnology\/\">Nanotechnology<\/a>, one of engineering\u2019s most rapidly advancing fields. These optional concentrations add another dimension to the bachelor\u2019s degree at a time when the demand for interdisciplinary engineers is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Senior Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bringing an invention to life is one of the most engaging and integral aspects of engineering\u2014that\u2019s why we designed our undergraduate program to culminate with a full-scale, hands-on design project. During your senior year, you will work in a small team with other computer and electrical engineering students in a two-semester capstone design project. Your team will design and prototype a product, electronic device, or software system from scratch for real-life customers drawn from industry, business, the community, faculty, and staff.
