former BU ECE Dept. Chair

Title: From Classical to Quantum Optics and Back: A Tale of the Bimode and the Qubit

Abstract: This tutorial explores the remarkable connections between classical and quantum optics by highlighting the deep similarities between the optical bimode (two optical modes, such as polarization modes) and the quantum bit (qubit). Throughout the talk, I will introduce these concepts and differences in a tutorial manner while illustrating them with examples drawn from the research that I have pursued over the past three decades at Boston University and the University of Central Florida.

Bio: Bahaa Saleh is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida, where he served as Dean from 2009 to 2019. He previously held faculty and research positions at a number of institutions including Boston University (1994–2008), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1977–1994), the University of Santa Catarina in Brazil, Kuwait University, the Max Planck Institute in Germany, the University of California-Berkeley, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, and Columbia University. His research contributions cover a broad range of topics in optics and photonics, such as statistical optics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and image science. Saleh is a highly acclaimed author, having published over 600 papers in journals and conference proceedings, and he holds 10 patents. He is also a Fellow of several prestigious organizations such as IEEE, Optica (formerly OSA), SPIE, APS, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
