Biomedical engineering at Boston University is an elite program, attracting exceptional graduate and undergraduate students nationally and internationally. Consistently ranked among the top BME Departments in the nation by US News & World Report, our 38 faculty members bring in $33.6M in external research funding annually. We have numerous research strengths, a wealth of resources and facilities, and strong ties with the BU School of Medicine, as well as many other top medical research centers in the Boston area. In both teaching and research, the BME department is known for its highly quantitative approach to biomedical science with liberal application of engineering principles and the physical sciences. The Biomedical Engineering Department has world-class faculty whose research and expertise span Molecular Bioengineering, Neural Engineering, Biomedical Optics, Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Applications of Nanotechnology, Subcellular, Cellular & Systems Biomechanics, Synthetic Biology and Systems Biology. Graduate students also have the opportunity to work with researchers in other engineering disciplines, with natural scientists, and with clinicians at the Boston University School of Medicine and other Boston-area hospitals. All new PhD students who are admitted to the Biomedical Engineering department are offered open fellowships for the first year.  This is one of the main attractions of our PhD program. During the first year, while the students are also taking courses, they do rotations in the labs of two or three professors, and arrange with one of them for a Research Assistantship starting the summer after the first academic year, assuming that the student has been making satisfactory progress in his/her academic studies. This approach is advantageous for students as well as professors, giving both a chance to get to know each other and to assess the fit of the student to the lab before committing.

The BME Department maintains state-of-the-art educational and research facilities, including a 170,000 square foot Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering Facility, a BioInterface Technologies Facility, a Micro and Nano Imaging Facility, and a Biomedical Engineering Computational Simulation Facility. We offer highly respected graduate programs, including Masters, PhD, and dual-degree programs.
