AI is Changing Software Development—Are We Ready?

Software Development in the Era of AI: Industry and Academia Perspectives

Software development is undergoing a fundamental shift. AI is no longer just a tool—it is becoming part of how software is built, and how it behaves.

Professors Osama AlShaykh and Ed Solovey have been involved in architecting and developing large- scale software systems, including Crashlytics, Android, mobile media systems, and AI collaboration systems used in industry. Both also teach software engineering at Boston University in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

In this talk, they will share their observations on the role of AI in software development— both as a development assistant and as part of production systems (e.g., copilots and agents), supported by real examples. They will also discuss their experience integrating AI into software engineering education at BU, with students helping demonstrate concepts and projects that emphasize the role of AI in current and future software development.

We argue that AI is here to stay—and that adopting it is essential for growth as engineers. Growth now means doing more, moving faster, and pushing beyond traditional boundaries.

We look forward to seeing you at this interactive presentation.
