Professor Christos Cassandras, Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Head of the Division of Systems Engineering at Boston University, has been awarded the 2026 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) Outstanding Research Award in recognition of his pioneering contributions to intelligent transportation systems, connected and automated vehicles, and smart city infrastructure. His research focuses on transforming urban mobility through networks of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) that communicate with one another and with transportation infrastructure to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, enhance safety, and increase overall transportation efficiency.
Cassandras’ work envisions a future in which cooperative, data-driven transportation systems replace today’s largely individualistic driving behaviors. By leveraging real-time communication, optimization algorithms, and innovative incentive mechanisms, his research aims to reduce accidents, minimize travel delays, and support more sustainable urban development. The award recognizes both the significant impact of his research on the field and his leadership in advancing technologies that will shape the future of transportation and smart cities worldwide.
