{"id":4021,"date":"2011-01-12T15:47:52","date_gmt":"2011-01-12T20:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/?page_id=4021"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:33:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:33:25","slug":"new-lab-personnel","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/laboratory-safety-home\/laboratory-safety-programs-services\/lsc-toolkit\/new-lab-personnel\/","title":{"rendered":"New Lab Personnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Getting Started<\/h2>\n<p>This section will provide the Lab Safety Coordinator with tools and information to help on-board and train new laboratory personnel.<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h3><a name=\"Admin\"><\/a>Administrative Items<\/h3>\n<p><em>These items can be done on the &#8220;first day&#8221; in the lab.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rohp\/forms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Research Occupational Health Program (ROHP) Forms<\/strong><\/a> Have your new personnel fill out the appropriate ROHP forms to enroll in Medical Surveillance (make sure you work with ROHP and EHS in advance to know which forms and medical clearance type\u00a0are needed)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.bioraft.com\">SciSure (formerly SciShield)<\/a>:\u00a0 Add the new member to your laboratory&#8217;s SciSure profile.\u00a0 Be sure to assign them the appropriate job activities in SciSure based on their duties.\u00a0 These job activities will dictate what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/training-how-to\/environmental-health-and-safety-training\/\">trainings<\/a> this member will be required to take.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>RIMS Registration<\/strong><\/a> Go to the RIMS homepage to create a profile for new personnel and to add to your Lab Roster.\u00a0<!-- Also visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rims\/training-registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RIMS Training Registration <\/a>page for more assistance in creating a profile. <em>To gain access to your laboratories account you must be set up as a secondary user in RIMS, ask your PI to provide access. Once you do have access you will be able to visit your labs account by clicking on your Principal Investigators name after the login page<\/em> --><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Research Compliance Website <\/strong><\/a>Orient new personnel to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/\">Office of Research Compliance<\/a> (ORC) website (and bookmark it!).\u00a0\u00a0Familiarize your new personnel with this site and help them register for any required ORC trainings.<\/li>\n<li>Add to Lab Protocols and Permits as applicable\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/compliance\/ibc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IACUC<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/compliance\/radiation-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radiation <\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/management-plans\/laboratory-safety\/controlled-substances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Controlled name=\"Class\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><a name=\"Specific\"><\/a>Lab-Specific Training<\/h3>\n<p>Discuss both applicable scientific and safety-related topics that are university-wide and those that are specific to your lab, your building, and your research.<\/p>\n<p>Part 1:\u00a0Laboratory Safety Center &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify\u00a0locations (online and in laboratory) and discuss contents of Lab Safety Center.<\/li>\n<li>The documents tab on your laboratory BioRAFT profile is your online resource for BU policies and documents such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/compliance\/laboratory-safety\/chemical-hygiene-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chemical Hygiene Plan<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"BU Biosafety Manual\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/compliance\/ibc\/resources\/biosafety-manual\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biosafety Manual<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/laboratory-safety-home\/laboratory-safety-policies\/exposure-control-plan-ecp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exposure Control Plan<\/a>, etc.\u00a0 Personnel should review these documents and be able to retrieve them if needed.<\/li>\n<li>Familiarize personnel with location of\u00a0 Safety Data Sheets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/ehs-topics\/chemical\/chemical-inventories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SDS<\/a>).\u00a0 Please note SDS&#8217;s are available online via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.bioraft.com\">SciSure<\/a>\u00a0using the <a href=\"https:\/\/bu.bioraft.com\/raft\/research_tools\/SDS\">SDS search option<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Part 2: Lab-Specific Processes, Hazards, and Equipment Orientation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lab personnel should be able to understand the importance of the HAZCOM Door signage and hazards indicated.<\/li>\n<li>Location and use of Life Safety devices (eye wash, shower, fire extinguisher, flip chart, Spill Containment kit, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Locations and use of specific personal protective equipment (PPE) (ensure consultation with ROHP and EHS)<\/li>\n<li>Locations and use of Chemical Storage Areas (flammable\/corrosive\/toxic\/gas cabinets)<\/li>\n<li>Locations and use of engineering controls such as chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets<\/li>\n<li>Procedures for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/ehs-topics\/environmental\/\">hazardous waste<\/a> management, including Satellite Accumulation Area and associated supplies.<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory Egress Routes and rally points<\/li>\n<li>Designated areas for high hazard procedures such as chemicals, radiation, biological, or laser use<\/li>\n<li>Specialty equipment, such as alarms for hazardous gas detection<\/li>\n<li>Lab-specific\u00a0laboratory techniques, practices, procedures provided by Principal Investigator or designee, and as required by approved protocols, along with how proficiencies will be determined<\/li>\n<li>Introduce any lab specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)<\/li>\n<li>Emergency contact
