Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) provides a full range of environmental, health, and safety services to the Boston University and Boston Medical Center (BMC) communities.<\/p>\n

Boston University is committed to Environmental Health & Safety in accordance with the\u00a0Boston University\u00a0Statement of Commitment to Environmental Health and Safety<\/a> and as described in BU’s culture of safety and responsibility guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Boston University demonstrates this commitment by\u00a0providing\u00a0education, resources, and services to enable a safe environment for\u00a0students, faculty, staff, patients, and others visiting our facilities, as well as compliance with federal, state, and local codes and regulations.<\/p>\n

How is Environmental Health & Safety organized?<\/h4>\n

The following divisions have Environmental Health & Safety oversight responsibilities at Boston University and work closely together with the BU and BMC communities:<\/p>\n

Campus & Clinical Safety<\/h5>
The Campus & Clinical Safety program provides services to all BU and BMC personnel and property in order to promote safety and maintain compliance with safety regulations. Campus & Clinical Safety works closely with other departments to address all broad-based safety concerns throughout BU and BMC. Campus & Clinical Safety is a division of Environmental Health & Safety.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
Environmental & Waste Management<\/h5>
The Environmental & Waste Management program provides the BU and BMC communities with the knowledge, tools, and infrastructure to minimize environmental impacts and maintain compliance with environmental regulations.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
Medical Physics & Radiation Safety<\/h5>
Medical Physics & Radiation Safety is responsible for ensuring that all clinical and research uses of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices at Boston University, Boston Medical Center, and affiliated neighborhood health clinics are safe for both employees and the general public while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations.<\/p>\n

The division is divided into two areas. Radiation Safety has core responsibilities regarding the use of clinical and research radiation sources while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Similarly, Medical Physics has the core responsibility of ensuring the safe and proper functioning of diagnostic imaging equipment with specific regard to image quality.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Research Safety<\/h5>
The Research\u00a0Safety division provides training, conducts inspections and evaluations, and implements various programs in laboratories on both campuses.\u00a0Subject areas include fire and life safety, chemical safety, biological safety, radiation safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental management.\u00a0The Research\u00a0Safety division\u00a0strives to provide a safe laboratory environment and to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal\u00a0regulations in all areas of environmental health and safety.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

These four divisions provide a full range of Environmental Health & Safety services to the Boston University and Boston Medical Center communities.<\/p>\n
