{"id":1216,"date":"2010-06-15T12:46:57","date_gmt":"2010-06-15T16:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/?page_id=1216"},"modified":"2025-01-22T12:18:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-22T17:18:05","slug":"exposure-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/laboratory-safety-home\/laboratory-safety-programs-services\/lsc-toolkit\/lab-resources\/safe-work-practices-in-the-lab\/exposure-monitoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Exposure Monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ionizing\u00a0Radiation Exposure\u00a0Monitoring: <\/strong>Please see the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Radiological Services\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/ehs-topics\/radiation-safety\/isotopes\/radiological-services\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radiological Services<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ehs\/management-plans\/rpo\/radioisotope-safety\/dosimetry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dosimetry<\/a> page(s).<\/p>\n<p>Employee exposure determination shall be done in accordance with paragraph (d) of\u00a0 29 CFR 1910.1450.<\/p>\n<h3>Initial Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>Initial monitoring will \u00a0be performed if there is reason to believe that exposure levels for an OSHA-regulated substance routine ly exceed the action level or, in the absence of an action level, the permissible exposure limit (PEL).<\/p>\n<p>The Permissible Exposure Limits for OSHA-regulated substances can be found in 29 CFR part 1910, subpart Z as indicated below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osha.gov\/pls\/oshaweb\/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&amp;p_id=9992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TABLE Z-1 Limits for Air Contaminants. &#8211; 1910.1000 TABLE Z-1<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osha.gov\/pls\/oshaweb\/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&amp;p_id=9993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TABLE Z-2 &#8211; 1910.1000 TABLE Z-2<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osha.gov\/pls\/oshaweb\/owadisp.show_document?p_table=STANDARDS&amp;p_id=9994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TABLE Z-3 Mineral Dusts &#8211; 1910.1000 TABLE Z-3<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Periodic Monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>Periodic monitoring will be conducted if the initial monitoring performed demonstrates employee exposure over the action level (or in the absence of an action level, the permissible exposure limit).\u00a0 Boston University and Boston Medical Center shall immediately comply with the exposure monitoring provisions of the relevant standard. Please refer to Section 4 \u201cMedical Services and Surveillance\u201d for more information.<\/p>\n<p>Within 15 working days after the receipt of any monitoring results, the employee will be notified of these results in writing either individually or by posting results in an appropriate location that is accessible to employees.<\/p>\n<p>Any Boston University or Boston Medical Center employee with a reason to believe that exposure levels for a substance exceed the action level or, in the absence of an action level the PEL, may initiate the monitoring process.\u00a0 Monitoring can be\u00a0requested by calling\u00a0Environmental Health and Safety at 617 638-7244.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ionizing\u00a0Radiation Exposure\u00a0Monitoring: Please see the Radiological Services\u00a0or\u00a0Dosimetry page(s).
