Held each spring and fall, EDRT\u2019s twice-yearly meetings provide members with a forum to exchange the latest research and thought. During these two-day themed seminars, members, their guests,\u00a0Questrom faculty, and featured experts discuss a particular current topic of executive and organizational development.<\/p>\n
The meetings are usually held in Boston, MA, but are sometimes held at other locations, such as USMA, West Point, New York; Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, NC; and Berkeley, CA, when appropriate. Featured speakers at the events are some of the most esteemed in the field.<\/p>\n
Spring 2015<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n The EDRT Spring 2015 meeting was held on\u00a0May 12-13, 2015 in Palo Alto, CA. The meeting built upon our Fall 2014 meeting discussion on developing a global leadership mindset; in Palo Alto we\u00a0examined the interconnected themes of creativity, innovation, and design thinking in leadership development amidst the specific leadership challenges brought on by our complex world today.<\/p>\n EDRT was proud to be hosted at the Institute for the Future’s (IFTF) new design facility and headquarters, and meeting attendees enjoyed\u00a0site visits to leading innovative Silicon Valley companies, Google<\/a> and LinkedIn<\/a> to explore and examine the ways in which leaders can foster world-class creativity, innovation, and complex problem solving.<\/p>\n Check out our Meeting Agenda\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Fall 2014<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n The EDRT Fall 2014 Meeting on November 13-14, 2014 at Hotel Commonwealth, Boston, MA had a wealth of discussion on the theme of \u201cDeveloping a Global Leadership Mindset.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0<\/b> Our speakers and attendees engaged in numerous sessions exploring the meaning of a global leadership mindset and how as development professionals, they can cultivate such a culture at their organizations.<\/p>\n EDRT was privileged to have Dr. Linda A. Hill<\/b>, Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, present as the keynote speaker at our Fall meeting.\u00a0 Professor Hill is a preeminent leadership scholar whose work focuses on developing exemplary leaders who can lead innovation in complex organizations and rapidly changing industries around the world.\u00a0Most recently, Professor Hill co-authored Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of Leading Innovation<\/a><\/i>, which examined exceptional leaders of innovation in a wide range of industries across the US, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Business Insider <\/i>named Collective Genius <\/i>one of \u201cThe 20 Best Business Books\u201d in Summer 2014. She is a frequent speaker and consultant in the areas of talent management, leading change and implementing global strategies with major global firms, including GE, Pfizer, the National Bank of Kuwait, Mitsubishi and IBM. She was named by Thinkers50 as one of the top ten management thinkers in the world.<\/p>\n <\/b>Check out the Meeting Agenda<\/a>!<\/p>\n Spring 2014<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n The EDRT Spring 2014 Meeting on May 22-23, 2014 at Hotel Commonwealth, Boston, MA was a great success.\u00a0\u00a0The theme of this meeting was \u201cLeading Cultural and Strategic Change in a Turbulent World.\u201d <\/i><\/b>The objective was to explore how organizations\u2019 leadership strategy and cultural change efforts should adapt and respond to the increasingly fast pace of change of our times. The topic stimulated an in-depth discussion of new ideas on how organizations could thrive in today\u2019s world, including how to unleash the power of dual operating systems and how to invest in collaborative and interdependent leadership models. EDRT members and guests actively participated in constructive dialogue and used EDRT\u2019s collective wisdom and energy to craft new plans, solutions, and initiatives for their own organizations.<\/p>\n EDRT was delighted and very pleased to have John P. Kotter\u00a0 <\/b>as our meeting\u2019s keynote speaker.\u00a0 Dr. Kotter is\u00a0Director of Research at Kotter International<\/a>, Emeritus Professor of Leadership at Harvard Business School, and the recipient of\u00a0\u00a0the esteemed 2014 Marion F. Gislason Award<\/a>, offered a fresh perspective on how organizations can achieve accelerated change through the use of a collaborative dual operating system, with a hierarchy on one side and a network on the other.<\/p>\n We were also very excited that David Dinwoodie<\/a>, Senior Faculty Member at the Center for Creative Leadership, shared his work on Leadership Strategy: The Human Enabler of Transformational Change.<\/p>\n Check out the agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n Fall\u00a02013<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n The Fall 2013 EDRT Meeting was held on October 16-17 at Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, MA. The meeting advanced our Spring 2013 theme on the global future of leadership development and explored how<\/i><\/b> individuals and organizations develop leaders across the changing landscape.<\/p>\n EDRT was delighted to have two world-class scholars, authors and consultants as our keynote speakers for the meeting: Kathy E. Kram, <\/b>the Shipley Professor in Management at the Boston University Questrom School of Business, and Monica Higgins<\/a><\/b>, Professor of Education at Harvard\u2019s Graduate School of Education. Their session, A New Mindset on the Critical Role of Mentoring in Leadership Development: A Developmental Network Approach<\/i> <\/i>was thought-provoking, valuable and timely for developing leaders for both today and tomorrow. At the meeting, Kathy Kram received the esteemed 2013 Marion F. Gislason Award for Excellence in the Field of Leadership Development<\/em><\/strong> in recognition for her extensive contributions to the field of executive development.<\/p>\n We were also very excited that Michael Campbell<\/a><\/b>, Faculty for Delivery and Research at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL<\/b>), shared his work in this domain. Michael\u2019s work focuses on talent management, succession management, high potential leaders as well as senior executive leadership. The meeting took place on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 through Thursday, October 4, 2012 and was held at Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, MA.\u00a0 This lovely boutique hotel adjacent to the Boston University campus proved to be a very nice venue, setting the stage for great brainstorming and discussion. Check out the agenda<\/a>!<\/p>\n Fall 2011<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Fall 2011 EDRT Meeting on \u201cDriving Business Results through Leadership Development\u201d<\/strong><\/em> was held on December 5th<\/sup>-7th<\/sup> at the scenic Boeing Leadership Center in the outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri, near where Lewis and Clark launched their 1804 Journey of Discovery Expedition. The meeting focused on how to build leadership processes and connections to drive business results. The keynote speaker was Robert E. Quinn<\/strong> from the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. Laura Quinn<\/strong>, from the Center for Creative Leadership and Dr. Larry McEvoy<\/strong>, CEO of Memorial Health System in Colorado, also served as guest speakers. At the meeting Prof. Quinn received EDRT\u2019s prestigious 2011 Marion F. Gislason Award for Excellence in the Field of Leadership Development<\/em><\/strong> for his many contributions to the study and practice of leadership. EDRT members, guests, speakers, thought leaders and panelists examined best practices, success factors and key hurdles across several industry sectors. They described the leadership challenges and the processes for aligning business and leadership development strategy. Ultimately, the learning objectives for the meeting were to understand how to craft clear connections between business and leadership strategy, including which necessary steps to take to help affect transformational change, how to promote a climate of trust and receptivity, and how to adopt a positive mindset that leads to excellence. Check out the overview & agenda<\/a>!<\/p>\n Spring 2011<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Spring 2011 EDRT Meeting on \u201cClosing the Gap Between the Business Strategy and the Leadership Development Strategy\u201d<\/em><\/strong> was held on April 26th<\/sup>\u2013 27th<\/sup> at the Boston University Questrom School of Business. The keynote speaker was Mike Useem <\/strong>from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Charles Palus<\/strong>, from the Center for Creative Leadership and Robert Burnside<\/strong>, a senior executive from Ketchum, also served as guest speakers. \u00a0The meeting addressed a challenge that has become increasingly pertinent to business and academic leaders alike: Businesses today in all sectors struggle with how to best align the leadership strategy with the business strategy, most frequently by identifying and learning from best practices. The challenge is to ensure a positive impact all the while working in a patient and resilient manner that is consistent with a company\u2019s culture. Check out the overview & agenda<\/a>!<\/p>\n Fall 2010<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Fall 2010 EDRT Meeting theme was \u201cCollaborating in a Dynamic, Globally Connected World\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>and was held on November 3rd<\/sup> -4th<\/sup> at the Boston University Questrom School of Business. EDRT secured outstanding keynote speakers and thought leaders that helped define and set the stage for what the leadership challenges are today for collaborating, and leading, across a changing unpredictable world. The keynote speakers were Rob Cross<\/strong>, from the University of Virginia, and Bill Pasmore<\/strong>, from the Center for Creative Leadership. In addition to his numerous outstanding professional and academic achievements, Rob is a distinguished alumni from the doctoral program from the Boston University School of Management in our Organizational Behavior Department. The meeting discussed how critical collaborating across global boundaries and dynamic networks is in all organizations today. Check out the overview & agenda<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n Spring 2010<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Spring 2010 EDRT Meeting on \u201cThe Strategic Use of Technology for Leadership Development\u201d<\/em><\/strong> was held on April 27 & 28, 2010 at the spectacular and profound campus of the United States Military Academy at West Point.\u00a0 Technology has transformed the workplace, which has impacted the ways in which leaders are developed. We examined these concepts and demonstrated their relevant application through working with knowledge experts, scholars and senior leaders to better understand ways to develop executives who will be capable of leading our organizations into an increasingly complex future. We were welcomed and hosted by EDRT member Ms. Frances Hesselbein<\/strong>, who served as the 2010 Term Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at West Point, the only woman and only non-West Point graduate to hold this prestigious chair appointment. The Leadership panel speakers were: Frances Hesselbein<\/strong>, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Leader to Leader Institute; Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the US Military Academy at West\u00a0 Point; COL Bernie Banks<\/strong>, Assistant Professor, Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, USMA; COL Erik Kail<\/strong>, Assistant Professor, Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, USMA; and Edward T. Reilly<\/strong>, President and CEO, American Management Association, International. All attendees agreed that it was an amazing and awesome experience to have been on campus at West Point learning and discussing leadership during these difficult times.
