All research grant applications are required to include a completed and signed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/econ\/files\/2009\/08\/IED-Student_Resources_Cover-Sheet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cover sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to include the following information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A written summary describing the need for this research grant (no more than three pages)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detailed budget (list anticipated trips for data collection and costs for each)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A detailed recommendation from a faculty advisor<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit applications by email to <a href=\"mailto:iedcoord@bu.edu\">iedcoord@bu.edu<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at any time during the academic year. Each student can apply for up to $2,000 per academic year toward travel. Grants will be awarded for student travel only through January of the first six years of their enrollment in the PhD program. Applications should be submitted before accepting a conference invitation unless the student plans on paying for the travel regardless of approval for the grant. Applications must be submitted no later than <\/span><b>four weeks in advance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the date of travel. Please note that travel grant funds cannot be paid in advance of the travel. The advisor should email their recommendation letter directly to iedcoord@bu.edu.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Can I apply for two conferences in one grant application?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nNo, please fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/econ\/ied-travel-grant-application\/\">application<\/a> for each conference, using a new cover sheet with each one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>When will I get reimbursed for my trip?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAs soon as you submit all final receipts using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/econ\/student-receipt-submission\/\">form<\/a>, this will initiate your reimbursement process. Please make sure to include an updated coversheet with the final costs. We cannot pre-pay for travel.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Can I use an IED travel grant to attend a conference if I&#8217;m not presenting?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nNo, unfortunately we are only able to reimburse students who are slotted to present at a conference.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>When does my $2,000 allotment reset?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe $2k allotment resets at the beginning of the fiscal year, which falls on July 1 of any given year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><b><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Student Journal Submission Grants<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To assist with the cost of publications, IED offers journal submission grants to Economics graduate students. Each student will be required to pay the first $25 toward the total amount of journal fees. Then the student is eligible to receive reimbursements of the remaining costs, including any subscription costs relating to the journal entry requirements. Student journal submission grants will be awarded only through January of the first six years of their enrollment in the PhD program. Receipts should be taped (not stapled) onto 8.5 x 11 paper in chronological order.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have submitted a complete application, it will be reviewed and\u2014if approved\u2014submitted for reimbursement. <span>Disbursements can only be made to students while they are enrolled at BU.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applications should be submitted to an IED administrator (264 Bay State Rd, Room 512, <a href=\"mailto:iedcoord@bu.edu\">iedcoord@bu.edu<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--\n\n<span>[collapsible heading=\"<b>Abdala Fieldwork Research Grants<\/b>\" elem=\"h3\"]<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/econ\/abdala-field-work-grant-application\/\">Application<\/a>\n\nThe Department of Economics and Institute for Economic Development (IED) at Boston University are pleased to invite proposals for Abdala Fieldwork Research Grants for 2026-27 from Economics <span>PhD<\/span> students. These grants are made possible by a generous gift from alumnus Manuel Abdala and will be supplemented with grants provided by IED to assist students in conducting research fieldwork. Award amounts vary, usually falling in the range of $2,000 \u2013 $8,000.\n\nFieldwork is broadly defined as work and expenses necessary for research projects that cannot be carried out on campus, e.g., conducting surveys or field experiments, interviewing subjects, collecting archival\/historical data not available in Boston. Grants will be awarded based on evaluations of the proposals based on expected research quality, policy relevance, the necessity of the fieldwork to carry out the research, and cost-effectiveness. A faculty committee appointed by the IED in consultation with the Department Chair will be selected from submitted applications. Following completion of the research, a project report needs to be submitted which summarizes the work completed,\u00a0results obtained so far and policy implications (if any).\n\nMost of the fieldwork should be planned to be completed by May 2027. Students receiving the grants will be required to submit a report of the work done.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/econ\/abdala-field-work-grant-application\/\">Applications<\/a> should be submitted\u00a0by <b>Monday<\/b><span>, <strong>March 23, 2026 at 11:59PM<\/strong><\/span>. They should include:\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li><span>A description (1500 words or less) of the proposed research, including motivation, design and nature of fieldwork to be carried out . If necessary provide additional details in an Appendix, but the main proposal should be self-contained.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>A budget with a detailed breakdown of different line items, with appropriate justification for each item.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>A timeline for different activities and completion of fieldwork.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>A recommendation letter to be submitted separately to the IED Program Coordinator by a faculty advisor\u00a0by the submission deadline. Please indicate which faculty advisor will be writing your recommendation letter in your email submission.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n[\/collapsible]\n\n--><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><b>Rosenstein-Rodan Prize<\/b><\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Institute for Economic Development of the Department of Economics is pleased to announce the Call for Rosenstein-Rodan Essay submissions, in memory of Professor Paul Rosenstein-Rodan. A monetary prize will be awarded to the best research paper(s) in development economics or related field submitted by a PhD student at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Any currently enrolled Boston University PhD student who has been in the graduate program for less than five full years may submit.<\/span> Joint papers by students are eligible, with the prize shared equally; joint papers with faculty or post-doctoral fellows are not eligible. Past winners are NOT eligible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Subject Matter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The paper can be in development economics or a related field (e.g., <span> economic history, international economics, growth, political economy, organizational economics, industrial economics, migration, emerging markets, economic geography, urban economics, economics of the family<\/span>). All computers are equipped with word processing, spreadsheet, and mathematical and statistical software packages, and each lab has a black-and-white laser printer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open hours<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal business hours are M-F, 8 am to 10 pm. Weekend hours are dependent on planned events. The building and computer labs are closed during Intersession and on University holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessing the computer labs<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IED computer labs have secured access; therefore, you will need to have a BU ID and Kerberos password before you can be added to the security system.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU ID instructions are found in your admission packet, or you can go to the Terrier Card Office (located in the GSU Basement).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are already on campus but do not have, or have forgotten components of, your BU login name and Kerberos password, please submit a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> request.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have all of the above, please go to 264 Bay State Road, Room 512, to request that you be added to the security system for the computer labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloud-based storage<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can take advantage of two different cloud-based storage offerings. Google Drive (part of the Google Apps suite) offers virtually unlimited storage and an easy-to-use interface \u2013 and is free to BU faculty, staff, and students. Students can sign up through Tech Web here: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/google\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/support\/google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can also be provisioned a Microsoft One Drive account with 1 Terabyte of storage as part of their Office 365 account. To access One Drive, submit a ticket at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/casit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.bu.edu\/casit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and include a recommendation from your advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computing problems<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All computer hardware and software problems should be reported to an IED administrator <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <a href=\"mailto:iedcoord@bu.edu\">iedcoord@bu.edu <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Identify the location of the computer and the nature of the problem; your input is the only way we know the equipment is malfunctioning and therefore the only way we can get it fixed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Printing problems<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paper jams, low toner signals, and any other issues should be reported to an IED administrator at <a href=\"mailto:iedcoord@bu.edu\">iedcoord@bu.edu<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paper is supplied by IED and can be found in each computer lab.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><\/span><b>Fax Services<\/b><span><\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receiving<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To receive a fax, send it to 617-353-4143, the fax machine in Room 510. The main intention is to encourage the presentation of research in progress to generate feedback and discussion. We need some coordination across groups to prevent excessive overlap or duplication of fields. They could be organized by the standard PhD fields such as macro or micro theory, econometrics, empirical micro, IO and health, development, etc. But a reading group could also be formed around other field definitions (e.g., political economy, international economics, or finance), which attract 10 or more PhD students.
