I have a\u00a0long-standing\u00a0interest in integrative, interdisciplinary reference work related energy. I study energy transitions: particularly significant changes to the patterns of energy supply and\/or energy use in a society that are accompanied by transformative cultural, economic, demographic, technological, and environmental changes. Energy, climate, and environmental justice are key themes in my work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I am founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/visualizingenergy.org\/\"><em>Visualizing Energy<\/em><\/a><span>, <\/span>\u00a0a data-driven, online resource that<span>\u00a0<\/span>communicates scientific information about the link between sustainable energy and human well-being to decision-makers, media, companies, advocates, educators, and the public.<span>\u00a0<\/span>The project knits data analysis, visualizations, and the written word into stories that reveal how our energy system can be transformed to reduce inequity, steer humanity from climate disaster, improve health and other social outcomes, and lead to healthy natural systems. <em>Visualizing Energy<\/em> is a project of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/igs\/\">Institute for Global Sustainability.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Teaching<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>EE 309 Intermediate Environmental Analysis &amp; Policy<\/li>\n<li>EE 519 Energy, Society, &amp; the Environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Biography<\/h3>\n<p><span>Cutler J. Cleveland is Professor of\u00a0Earth and Environment\u00a0and Associate Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/igs\/\">Institute for Global Sustainability.<\/a> He is founder and co-project leader of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/visualizingenergy.org\/\" title=\"https:\/\/visualizingenergy.org\/\"><i><span>Visualizing Energy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>.<\/span><\/span> He recently served as the principal investigator for<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/cfb\/\"><em>Carbon Free Boston<\/em><\/a>, a technical assessment of strategies to assist the City of Boston in reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. He currently serves on the Advisory Board for<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drawdown.org\/\">Project Drawdown<\/a>. Dr. Cleveland is author and editor of reference works on energy that include the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Encyclopedia-Energy-Series\/dp\/012176480X\"><em>Encyclopedia of Energy<\/em><\/a><em><u>,<\/u><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>winner of an\u00a0American Library Association award, the,<span>\u00a0<\/span><em><u>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/books\/dictionary-of-energy\/cleveland\/978-0-08-096811-7\">Dictionary of Energy<\/a><\/u><\/em><u>\u00a0<\/u>and the<em>\u00a0Handbook of Energy<\/em><em>.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Dr. Cleveland is the recipient of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaee.org\/awards.aspx\">Adelman-Frankel Award<\/a>\u00a0from the United\u00a0States Association of Energy Economics for \u201cunique and innovative contributions to the field of energy economics.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0He is the co-author of\u00a0<em>Environmental Science<\/em><em>,<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>the Web\u2019s first\u00a0electronic textbook on the subject. Dr. Cleveland\u2019s research on the valuation of ecosystem services, funded by the National Science Foundation, is highlighted in NSF\u2019s Top Discoveries series. He has been a consultant to numerous private and public organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations\u00a0Commission on Sustainable Development, the Energy Information Administration, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
