The Dr. Farouk El-Baz Environmental Science Prize is named after the Founding Director of BU\u2019s Center for Remote Sensing. Dr. El-Baz has conducted field investigations in every major desert in the world and is known for his pioneering work in using space images to explore for groundwater in arid lands; he is credited with the discovery of groundwater resources in Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. The prize is awarded to Earth & Environmental Science students who have excelled in their major and embody Dr. El-Baz\u2019s investigative spirit.<\/p>\n

This year, the honor goes to Drew Bouchie, who is majoring in Earth and Environmental Science with a minor in Marine Science, and he is graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA!<\/p>\n

Drew embraces learning out of deep curiosity and passion for science and our planet. He is smart, hard-working, and eager; multiple professors have remarked that he is one of the best students they have taught in years. In 2023, Drew completed a field internship in Sardinia, Italy. He has also worked in the Rotjan lab in Biology, and over this past semester he has worked in the Fulweiler Lab, where he helped re-design some equipment \u2013 and participated in some very cold winter fieldwork. Drew also displays a strong intellectual kindness \u2013 where he happily helps classmates. Last year, Drew was awarded the Franklin C Erikson Prize given each year to an extraordinary junior. We are incredibly excited to see where his work and spirit take him.<\/p>\n
