The Department of Earth &amp; Environment is committed to fostering diverse, inclusive, and equitable living, learning, and working environments that are supportive and free from violence, harassment, disruption, and intimidation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Department of Earth &amp; Environment recognizes that creating a safe environment and a culture of respect is the shared responsibility of all members of our community. To ensure an equitable environment that values and respects the unique experiences and perspectives of current and prospective members of our community, the Department will:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>promote diversity, inclusion, and equity among all members of our departmental community;<\/li>\n<li>foster healthy and equitable relationships; and<\/li>\n<li>encourage open, honest, and compassionate communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Statement of Principles<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"\/earth\/files\/2024\/06\/EE-Statement-of-Principles.pdf\">E&amp;E Statement of Principles<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Statement of Principles comprises standards for professional behavior that guide faculty members, staff, and students associated with the Department of Earth &amp;Environment. Individuals associated with the Department are expected to aspire and adhere to the following standards of behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>A. Principles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">1. Excellence, integrity, and honesty in all aspects of professional work<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">2. Professional and personal courtesy, equity, and fairness in working with others<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">3. Responsible pursuit of scholarship free from interference or coercion<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">4. Active participation in the departmental community<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>B. Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">1. <strong>Conduct:<\/strong> Members will act with honesty in the interest of the Department, College, and University, and will take responsibility for the trustworthiness of their research, teaching, service, and professional activities. Members will treat others with courtesy, equity, and fairness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">2. <strong>Integrity:<\/strong> Members will take responsibility for the integrity of their contributions to all professional activities related to the Department, college, and university.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">3. <strong>Acknowledgement:<\/strong> Members will acknowledge the names and roles of those who made significant contributions to their scholarship and activities (e.g., publications, lecture slides, etc.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">4. <strong>Public Communication:<\/strong> Members will honor the boundaries of their professional expertise when representing the Department during public discussions or with the press. Members will clearly distinguish professional comments from their opinions based on personal views.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">5. <strong>Environment:<\/strong> Members of the Department will create and uphold a safe, open, and professional environment for learning, conducting, and communicating science with integrity, respect, fairness, trustworthiness, and transparency at all organizational levels and in all endeavors<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">6. <strong>Stewardship of the Earth:<\/strong> Members will ethically, responsibly, accurately, and clearly inform the public and other societal stakeholders about environmental phenomena of importance to the well-being of Earth and society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">7. <strong>Misconduct:<\/strong> Members will not engage in discrimination, harassment, bullying, dishonesty, fraud, misrepresentation, coercive manipulation, censorship, or other misconduct. This applies to all professional, research, and teaching environments. An expanded discussion of this topic appears below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">8. <strong>Adherence to Law and Regulations:<\/strong> Members will be aware of and adhere to laws and regulations related to their professional conduct.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">9. <strong>Reporting Irresponsible Practices:<\/strong> Members will take responsibility to act or intercede where possible to prevent misconduct. Where appropriate, members will respect reporting procedures for any suspected misconduct, including fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism of materials, as well as discrimination, harassment, bullying, or other irresponsible behaviors that undermine the Department or BU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In order to demand continuous accountability to these commitments within our Department, the Inclusion and Diversity Committee will lead a series of ongoing efforts, including those we&#8217;ve accomplished since our inception in 2018:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>sponsoring department-wide diversity and inclusion trainings;<\/li>\n<li>integrating discussions of diversity in the classroom;<\/li>\n<li>engaging in department-wide harassment awareness and prevention trainings;<\/li>\n<li>maintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-inclusion-resources\/\">a curated collection of diversity- and harassment-related resources<\/a> available to all faculty, staff, and students, including resources and support for victims\/survivors; and<\/li>\n<li>sharing what we have learned with the BU community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diversity enriches all research and education, and is realized only with all voices, views, and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23384,"featured_media":0,"parent":23,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"bu-landing","meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/20367"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23384"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=20367"}],"version-history":[{"count":19,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/20367\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22351,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/20367\/revisions\/22351"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/23"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20367"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
