{"id":2100,"date":"2010-07-04T12:55:08","date_gmt":"2010-07-04T16:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/?p=2100"},"modified":"2010-07-04T12:56:57","modified_gmt":"2010-07-04T16:56:57","slug":"independence-musing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/2010\/07\/04\/independence-musing\/","title":{"rendered":"Independence Musing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today America celebrates the bold move &#8212; a move that made a King and a nation say, &#8220;Oh no they didn&#8217;t!&#8221;\u00a0 We reminded the King that <a title=\"U.S. Declaration of Independence\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/rr\/program\/bib\/ourdocs\/DeclarInd.html\" target=\"_blank\">we were free<\/a> and that we would let no one turn Us around, or say otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2101\" src=\"\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/001q-243x300.jpg\" alt=\"001q\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/001q-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/001q.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One hundred years ago, more enviable boldness that could get you killed.\u00a0 Much has been made about how 100 years ago today, a freedom fight took place.\u00a0 Jack Johnson &#8211; not the singer &#8211;\u00a0 <a title=\"New York Times - Johnson &amp; Jeffries\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/04\/sports\/othersports\/04boxing.html?scp=3&amp;sq=jack%20johnson&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\">defended his heavyweight boxing title<\/a>.\u00a0 Not an ordinary fight, but a fight by a person who taught us that we need to live our lives a free people.\u00a0 I&#8217;m remembering Johnson because he lived his life as a person free of social hangups; in full view; as he wanted to; with courage to defy conventional wisdom; loud and strong; impolite; and, as cool as they get.\u00a0 Sure, he was flawed, but he knew how to live a life.\u00a0 Cheers to the declaration he made with his life &#8211; a declaration that help make it possible for me to live mine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2102\" src=\"\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/live-your-life-202x300.gif\" alt=\"live-your-life\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/live-your-life-202x300.gif 202w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dos\/files\/2010\/07\/live-your-life.gif 318w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today America celebrates the bold move &#8212; a move that made a King and a nation say, &#8220;Oh no they didn&#8217;t!&#8221;\u00a0 We reminded the King that we were free and that we would let no one turn Us around, or say otherwise.
