Our Mission
Historically, Boston University has opened its doors to all regardless of race, gender, or religion. Today, we aim for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) because we know that diversity—of people, ideas, experiences, and approaches—leads to excellence. This pledge is one of five pillars in the University’s 2030 Strategic Plan. Established in 2020 by the Board of Trustees and President Brown, the Office of the Senior Diversity Officer (OSDO) is one of BU’s many commitments to DEI.
The mission of the OSDO is to be an active, engaged liaison between the University’s senior leadership team and the broader BU community to identify and recommend systemic changes to improve bias policy. We are committed to promoting inclusive excellence and maintaining an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and supported to achieve their full potential. We do this by:
- Convening and collaborating with stakeholders to encourage robust dialogue and support of evolving DEI initiatives.
- Actively listening to diverse groups to make changes that benefit and advance us all.
- Supporting DEI ambassadors across campus to catalyze institutional change.
- Being transparent about our office’s goals and processes with the BU Community.
