{"id":61007,"date":"2025-05-06T11:06:02","date_gmt":"2025-05-06T15:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dental\/?p=61007"},"modified":"2025-05-06T13:53:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T17:53:22","slug":"ada-2024-health-literacy-video-winners-huang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dental\/2025\/05\/06\/ada-2024-health-literacy-video-winners-huang\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Spotlight: GSDM Student Awarded First Place in National Oral Health Literacy video contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tim Huang DMD 25 and his brother Scott Huang, a student at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, won the 2024 American Dental Association and the National Advisory Committee Oral Health Literacy in Dentistry Video Contest with an engaging music video promoting oral healthcare tips.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt didn&#8217;t fully hit us [that we won until] we got a call,\u201d Tim said. \u201cWe both got the emails at first and we were like \u2018Is this happening?\u2019 When we both got phone calls, we said \u2018Oh my God, this is real.\u2019 We called up friends [and kept saying] \u2018Oh my God, this is real. (Photo credit: Dan Bomba, GSDM.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the Huang brothers first heard about the contest, they decided it would be a unique opportunity to work together\u2014something they rarely do during their different dental school journeys.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The contest asked for three-to-four-minute video submissions that displayed the &#8220;teach-back&#8221; method of patient instruction, educating a 17-year-old patient on nutritional counseling and dental caries risk. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The sibling duo took an unconventional approach to the contest, opting to write an original spoken rap song depicting a patient\u2019s dental visit with two dentists. The brothers recruited another Tufts dental student, Jamyla Palomar, to sing alongside them as the patient in the video. It took three days for the Huang brothers to write the song, complete with rhyming health facts, and then film, edit, re-record audio, and export the final video submission.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe were hoping that the whole music video thing would kind of make it stand apart,\u201d Tim said. \u201cTowards the end though, I think we were just like \u2018I&#8217;m just glad that we&#8217;re done.\u2019 And then, we were hoping to win. My brother was like \u2018Oh my gosh, we&#8217;re putting in so much more time than we thought we would have to. Going forward, he hopes the video will inspire dental professionals not to be afraid to use creative tactics when trying to connect with patients.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;Because it&#8217;s more of in a song kind of fashion and a little gimmicky, I hope it will be easier to remember,\u201d Tim said. \u201cSometimes, we&#8217;re just spitting facts [and] patients don&#8217;t always remember.
