1958
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span>Boston University School of Medicine <\/span>established<\/span> a Department of Stomatology <\/span>to provide post<\/span>doctoral education in dentistry<\/span>, becoming the <\/span>first<\/span> <\/span>institution in the country <\/span>to offer<\/span> specialty education in dentistry.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/span>Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry was founded under the leadership of Dean Henry M. Goldman. The school was located in a three-and-a-half-story brownstone building on East Concord Street.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Construction of the 100 East Newton Street building began.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe school initiated a three-year predoctoral program leading to a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1973<\/strong>
\nThe school built four more floors onto the 100 East Newton Street facility, bringing the building to its current seven stories. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1975<\/strong>
\nBoston University School of Graduate Dentistry graduated its first three-year DMD class. This was the only class that completed the DMD program in three years as after the class matriculated, the decision was made to increase the length of the program to four years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1977<\/strong>
\nHenry M. Goldman retired, and Spencer N. Frankl became the second dean of Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. Frankl would go on to serve in this role for 31 years,<\/span> setting a record as the longest-serving dean of a U.S. dental school\u2014a record he still holds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry was<\/span> renamed to the Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry by the Trustees of Boston University.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nThe school<\/span> implemented the APEX (Applied Professional Experience) <\/span>p<\/span>rogram<\/span>, <\/span>during which<\/span> preclinical dental students gain<\/span> experience in the dental practice environment.<\/span><\/span>

\nThe Dental Health Center at 930 Commonwealth Ave. opened, expanding care to the University\u2019s Charles River Campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBoston University School of Graduate Dentistry was renamed Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) to better reflect the scope of the school\u2019s education, research, patient care, and community missions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2000<\/strong>
\nGSDM concentrated the predoctoral curriculum under the new Department of General Dentistry. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2000<\/strong>
\nThe school opened its first Simulation Learning Center (SLC), where preclinical students practice dentistry on virtual patients in a high-tech setting. The SLC was at 670 Albany Street, across from the dental school.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2000<\/strong>
\nGSDM became one of six dental schools in the United States to replace traditional textbooks and classroom materials with digital texts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2007<\/strong>
\nDean Spencer Frankl announced in July that he would step down as dean.\u00a0 Jeffrey W. Hutter was then appointed the school\u2019s dean ad interim, following Frankl\u2019s passing in October.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2008<\/strong>
\nJeffrey W. Hutter was named the third dean in the school\u2019s history.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2014<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span>GSDM <\/span>became <\/span>the first <\/span>U.S. <\/span>dental school to transition <\/span>to<\/span> fully integrated digital dentistry.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2018<\/strong>
\n<\/span>GSDM broke ground on a $115 million addition and renovation project to expand the school\u2019s footprint and modernize its facilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2020<\/strong>
\nGSDM became the first American dental school to use a dental implant robot. The robot-assisted surgical device, known as Yomi, was the first such technology approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/p>\n

2021<\/strong>
\nThe school completed its renovation project, adding about 48,000 additional square feet to the school, including a seven-story addition on the west side and a two-story addition on the north side. The building was entirely reclad in a modern fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n

2021<\/strong>
\nDean Hutter retired in March 2021. Dr. Cataldo Leone was named interim dean following Hutter\u2019s retirement and then appointed as the school\u2019s fourth dean in November 2021.<\/p>\n
