We&#8217;ve outlined some common scenarios on this page, but if you have additional questions, or if you have a name-change question not covered on this page, please contact Student Affairs at <a href=\"mailto:gsdmsa@bu.edu\">gsdmsa@bu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Editing your display name in Blackboard<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You may edit your first name as it appears on Blackboard. Notify faculty if your chosen name (the one displayed on Blackboard) DOES NOT MATCH your legal name. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Directions on how to change your chosen name (first name only) on Blackboard are available <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Getting_Started\/Personal_Settings\"><span class=\"s3\">HERE<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please note: <span class=\"s2\">Changing your name on Blackboard does not constitute a legal name change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Editing your display name in the BU Directory or email display name<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s4\">You are able to change your display name on the directory and email display name. This can be used to remove your middle name or change how your first and last <\/span><span class=\"s5\">names<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> are displayed on BU systems regardless of your legal\/official name. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Directions on how to change your display name are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/security\/iam\/buid\/changing-your-display-name\/\"><span class=\"s3\">HERE<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Please note: <span class=\"s2\">Changing your name in the directory or your email does not constitute a legal name change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Changing your name legally as an adult<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Domestic students: Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/how-to\/legally-change-your-name-as-an-adult\"><span class=\"s3\">Massachusetts Court System website<\/span><\/a> for more information<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">International students: Contact ISSO for assistance at 617-353-3565 or via email at <a href=\"mailto:isso@bu.edu\"><span class=\"s3\">isso@bu.edu<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Changing your legal name in University Records<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At this time, BU\u2019s student information system, transcript, diploma and degree verification reflect an individual\u2019s legal name.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Domestic students: If you have completed a legal name change in Massachusetts or another state, you must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/files\/2016\/07\/personaldataupdate-v4-002.pdf\"><span class=\"s3\">Personal Data Update Form<\/span><\/a> and send it, along with appropriate documentation (e.g. driver\u2019s license, passport, marriage certificate, or legal name change form, to <a href=\"mailto:registrar@bu.edu\"><span class=\"s3\">registrar@bu.edu<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s6\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">International students: Contact ISSO for assistance at 617-353-3565 or via email at <a href=\"mailto:isso@bu.edu\"><span class=\"s3\">isso@bu.edu<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s6\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Changing your BU email address<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Because it is a unique identifier stored in many different locations at the University, changes to a BU login name\/email address require considerable staff time and coordination, and cannot be easily changed. However, if you feel strongly that you need to change your BU login name\/email, you can submit a ticket to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/contact\/\"><span class=\"s3\">IT Help Center<\/span><\/a>. Requests for changes due to special circumstances, such as a legal name change, will be accepted with no fee. Changes outside of this will incur a $50 fee for this service and it may take several weeks to be completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Changing your name on your Terrier Card (aka BU ID)<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you have completed a legal name change, you can get a new BU ID card at no charge.
