Sights and Sounds: GSDM Predoctoral Matriculation Week 2024
For the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine DMD Class of 2028 and DMD AS Class of 2026, the 2024 Predoctoral Matriculation Week was a tailor-made introduction to life at GSDM.
From the new student check-in to panel discussions, the new DMD and DMD Advanced Standing students had a busy week of programming to prepare them for a successful and rewarding dental school journey. Here are a few “sights and sounds” from the week.

Monday, July 29 – Day 1
The 200+ members of the DMD Class of 2028 and DMD AS Class of 2026 arrived Monday morning, reporting first to the New Student Check in and Breakfast. After attending various lectures throughout the day, students relaxed, mingled, and learned about various student organizations during the Student Life Fair and Ice Cream Social.
“I thank you for choosing Boston University. We really appreciate it. We will do our best as faculty and staff to uphold our end of the bargain.”
Dean Cataldo Leone
Tuesday, July 30 – Day 2
Over the course of the day, the school’s newest students were fitted for their loupes (magnifying glasses), scrubs and white coat–all essential gear for dental professionals. In between fittings, ambassadors led their group on a tour of GSDM and the Boston University Medical Campus, pointing out the locations students will need to know and answering any questions along the way.
“I promise to do everything I can to have that smile on your face in two or four years. It will be challenging. There will be amazing highs and some lows, but the important thing is that we learn from the process and not get too focused on the prize at the end.”
Dr. Joseph Calabrese, associate dean of students
Wednesday, July 31 – Day 3
Students attended a panel discussion with first-year course directors moderated by Dr. Gail McCausland, GSDM associate dean for academic affairs. On Wednesday afternoon, members of the DMD Class of 2028 received their dental instrument kits, which contain carefully selected items that will be frequently used during the program. (Instrument kits were handed out to the DMD AS students on Tuesday and Thursday.)
“It’s amazing that a year ago, I was in their shoes. I know what questions and concerns they have. I’m happy to help them overcome any fears.”
Stephanie Catalano DMD AS 2025, Matriculation Ambassador
Thursday, August 1 – Day 4
Wellbeing was a priority on Thursday, as members of both classes attended a workshop put on by Boston University Student Wellbeing and created personalized wellbeing plans. Four current DMD students shared candid stories to the DMD Class of 2028 during a student panel, stressing the importance of time management and study habits. The day closed with the Dean’s reception on Talbot Green, an evening was full of merriment and enthusiasm.
“I love dentistry, and this was what I did for 10 years in my country. I was so happy when I was accepted, and I’m even happier now being here.”
Cornel Cazacus DMD AS 2026
Friday, August 2 – Day 5
The 2024 Predoctoral Matriculation Week ended with as much excitement as it began: The two classes were officially welcomed to GSDM and the field of dentistry in front of their loved ones during the Professional Ceremony. Before students receive their Boston University pin, the DMD Class of 2028 and DMD AS Class of 2026 take their class photo for the first time and write a letter to themselves to read before their Commencement–a GSDM tradition called “Future DMD.”
