New Format for 2026 GSDM Commencement

For the first time in school history, Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) will be holding two separate commencement ceremonies this May, one for postdoctoral residents and one for predoctoral students.

This decision was informed by a close review of prior commencement ceremonies, with a particular focus on event flow, timing, and the overall experience of graduates and their families.

“By separating commencement into two ceremonies, we are creating more streamlined events in which the content, recognition, and overall flow are more directly relevant to those being honored,” GSDM Dean Cataldo Leone said. “Overall, I believe this approach will result in a more meaningful and celebratory experience for all involved.”

To accommodate the change in event schedule, the school’s commencement ceremonies will now be held on Thursday of Commencement weekend, May 14, at Agganis Arena (925 Commonwealth Avenue). The postdoctoral convocation ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. and the predoctoral convocation ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Another change is that graduating students will have the opportunity to be hooded at this year’s predoctoral convocation ceremony. Participation is optional.

Additional details regarding 2026 Commencement are on the school’s Commencement landing page.
