The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) hosted the Seventh Annual Donald F. Booth Education Day on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, in the Bakst Auditorium in Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). The event honors Department Chair Emeritus Dr. Booth.

The guest speakers were Dr. Michael Miloro, Professor and Department Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, and Dr. Douglas Smail who is in private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery in Troy, New York.  After breakfast and opening remarks from Dean Jeffrey W. Pushkar Mehra: “Challenges Facing an Academic OMS Department Today.” Dr. Michael Miloro: “Management of Trigeminal Nerve Injuries.” Dr. Douglas Smail: “Increasing Implant Referrals: Why you MUST use Digital Dentistry in your OMS Practice.”

After the morning session, the following third year oral and maxillofacial surgery residents presented their ongoing research projects: Layeeq Ahmed, OMFS 17: “Gingival Cancer-Trends in Incidence, Mortality and Survival Rate Among Different Age Groups and Ethnicities. A 35-Year SEER Analysis in the US Population.” Varun Arya, OMFS 17: “A Prospective Observational Study to Assess Clinical and Radiological Outcomes of Orthognathic Surgery in Individuals with Temporomandibular Disorders.” Scott Goldberg, OMFS 17:  “Impact of Maxillomandibular Advancement on Health Related Functional Outcomes in OSA Patients.” Mikhail Kobakov, OMFS 17: “The Prevalence of Cervical Spine Injuries Associated with Maxillofacial Trauma in an Urban Level 1 Trauma Center.”

These presentations were followed by updates by all residents regarding their individual research projects. The final evening session involved a dinner in the GSDM cafeteria followed by combined Grand Rounds between the faculty and residents from all three Boston-based oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training programs: Boston University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Tufts University.
