This research aims to understand how autism affects sign language development in children exposed to a sign language from birth.\u00a0<strong>We hope that our study will lead to better treatment options for deaf children as well as a better understanding of how autism affects learning in both deaf and hearing children.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This research is funded by a three-year postdoctoral grant to Dr. Aaron Shield from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), one of the National Institutes of Health, and a research enhancement grant from the Autism Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\r\n(function(d, s, id) {   var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];   if (d.getElementById(id)) return;   js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;   js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\";   fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));\r\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>News!<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Our recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25643865\" target=\"_blank\">paper in the <em>Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders<\/em><\/a>\u00a0on the use of sign language pronouns by deaf children with autism has been featured by\u00a0a number of different outlets: the <a href=\"http:\/\/leader.pubs.asha.org\/Article.aspx?articleid=2300819&amp;utm_source=asha&amp;utm_medium=enewsletter&amp;utm_campaign=leaderlive060315\" target=\"_blank\">American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) Leader<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytexanonline.com\/2015\/04\/06\/study-hearing-and-deaf-children-with-autism-both-avoid-using-pronouns\" target=\"_blank\">the Daily Texan<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfari.org\/news-and-opinion\/blog\/2015\/sign-language-study-solves-autisms-pronoun-mystery\" target=\"_blank\">Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Aaron Shield, the Principal Investigator of the Deaf Autism Research Project, recently wrote a piece for the SFARI website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sfari.org\/sfari-community\/community-blog\/cross-talk\/2015\/cross-talk-scientists-discuss-selfhood-in-autism\" target=\"_blank\">commenting on possible differences in the autistic experience of selfhood<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Deaf Autism Research Project has concluded and is therefore no longer recruiting participants.
