Margaret Litvin is Associate Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature. She teaches courses including \u201cGlobal Shakespeares,\u201d \u201c1001 Nights in the World Literary Imagination,\u201d \u201cArabic Translation & Interpreting,\u201d and the bilingual course \u201cIntro to Arabic Literature,\u201d as well as courses in the Core social science and Literary Translation MFA sequences. She also founded BU\u2019s interdisciplinary Middle East and North Africa Studies major in 2014 and has advised the Arabic minor since 2009. She welcomes prospective student inquiries about the BU MFA in Literary Translation.<\/p>\n
Litvin\u2019s research aims to help situate modern Arabic cultural production in its world literary context. She has published on Arabic rewritings of Shakespeare (the 2011 book\u00a0<\/span>Hamlet\u2019s Arab Journey: Shakespeare\u2019s Prince and Nasser\u2019s Ghost<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>and related articles); on post-2001 global Arab\/ic theatre; and on the literary legacies of Arab-Russian and Arab-Soviet literary ties. Most recently she has co-edited the primary source anthology\u00a0<\/span>Russian-Arab Worlds: A Documentary History\u00a0<\/span><\/em>with historians Eileen Kane and Masha Kirasirova (Oxford, 2023); won a 2023 PEN\/Heim Translation Grant to translate\u00a0<\/span>al-Hayy al-Rusi\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(The Russian Quarter) by Syrian novelist Khalil Alrez; and published an article about \u201cracist inclusion\u201d in Soviet student dormitories and international novels about them (Comparative Literature,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>June 2023). This year she is completing a long-simmering book titled\u00a0<\/span>Another East: Arab Writers, Moscow Dreams\u00a0<\/span><\/em>and co-translating a memoir by Palestinian communist Najati Sidqi (1905-1979).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n\n\n
