Abstract: This paper illustrates how Imperial Oil’s mid-twentieth century practices of contributions and map-making describe a utopian Canada of their own design and tells a story about how they thought Canadians should explore, navigate, and memorialize the landscape. With this investigation the paper will theorize how settler colonial secular normativity is actively created and mediated through oil.
