Cancer Research at CTSA Program Hubs<\/a><\/h4>\n

May was National Cancer Research Month, and Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program hubs are on the forefront of cancer research. From genetic counseling to mining electronic health records,\u00a0the CTSA Program is approaching cancer research from multiple directions, with the goal of getting treatments to patients more quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Black Voices in Research: the University of Florida CTSI Provides a Platform for Underrepresented Voices<\/a><\/h4>\n

Dressed in black, Tiffany Danielle Chisholm Pineda stood on a stage and spoke about her experience as a Black research professional working to eliminate personal biases in scientists.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time I\u2019m pointing out what people didn\u2019t have the ability to see because of the perspective of the lens of their culture,\u201d she said. \u201cI am here to share my story so that you can look and see what needs to be done to evolve, to grow, to clean, or even throw away your lenses so that these stories are no longer being told, even in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pineda is the chair of the University of Florida Clinical and Translational Science Institute\u2019s Diversity and Cultural Competency Council (UF CTSI DC3), which is funded through the NIH\u2019s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0is now in the beginning stages of putting together a \u201ccall to action\u201d for other CTSA Program hubs, which would bring hubs together to exchange ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Electrodes in a paralyzed man\u2019s brain turned his imagined handwriting into words typed on a screen. The translation from brain to text may ultimately point to ways to help people with disabilities like paralysis communicate using just their thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4th Annual Children’s National – NIAID Symposium (Virtual)<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n

Webinar:\u00a0Participant Engagement Platform (PEP): Stanford\u2019s honest broker services for participant recruitment<\/a><\/h4>\n

Stanford Medicine\u2019s Research Participation services has developed the Participant Engagement Platform (PEP) as a way of offering and managing \u201chonest broker\u201d outreach, such as Direct Email and Epic MyChart. The Research Participation team (honest broker) sends the study invitation to potential participants (identified via EHR cohort search) on behalf of the study team. Only when a potential participant expresses interest, does the Research Participation team pass on their contact info to the study team for follow-up. This is an exciting way to scale recruitment to engage more participants, while protecting patient privacy and reducing study team burden.<\/p>\n
