During his life, he experienced symptoms consistent with the early stages of suspected CTE. He was the fun-loving teammate who kept the team spirit high throughout his youth baseball and football careers and these were traits he took with him during his three years as a firefighter. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He is remembered as everybody\u2019s friend, the type of friend that would give you the shirt off his back, no questions asked. His Best Man record is a testament to exactly that. His speeches are quite famous among his large group of friends and family.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI always felt his love,\u201d said his mother, Cindy. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She remembers his sense of humor, intelligence, storytelling ability, and his kindness. \u201cHe would tell me he was proud of me. That melts a mom\u2019s heart coming from your child.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"307\" class=\" wp-image-7834 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-770x1024.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-768x1021.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-1156x1536.jpg 1156w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1-1541x2048.jpg 1541w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Chiefs-fan-1.jpg 1823w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>Mario loved the outdoors and Montana was his favorite place to spend time. He loved listening to Chris Stapleton and his favorite pair of cowboy boots. He loved the Kansas City sports teams so fervently he had their logos as tattoos. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs most of all and Cindy remembers him predicting Patrick Mahomes\u2019 success years before it happened. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">His first concussion was a surprise to Cindy. She was unaware of it until a doctor examining him after his second concussion mentioned there was evidence of a prior concussion. Before his senior football season, his parents invested in a concussion helmet, but he sustained the third concussion in practice two days before the season started.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt changed that kid that year,\u201d Cindy said. \u201cHe struggled his whole senior year.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"408\" class=\" wp-image-7814 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-1152x2048.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Fun-Uncle-Mo-scaled.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>At one point, he seemed to be getting better. He had the opportunity to join a program that allowed students that fell behind in high school but showed potential to begin college early in the summer. He went into the program and received extra assistance in the summer to better adjust to college in the fall. Mario eventually came home from the program after one semester. He was disappointed in himself, again Cindy saw it as lingering effects. He began figuring out the next steps. He was interested in joining the military but was advised against it because of his concussion history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ultimately, he followed what several family members did, including his father, and served as a firefighter. Mario graduated from the academy in March 2015 and served proudly as a member of the Kansas City Fire Department.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> He thought it was honorable to be of service to his community and he had a special bond with the crew he worked with at the station. Looking back there were events during his time as a firefighter that seemed to compound his symptoms. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"410\" class=\"wp-image-7823 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-1152x2048.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Recieving-FF-pins-scaled.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>Soon after solidifying his career, he bought his own home. It was around this time when additional changes in his personality and demeanor became apparent. When Cindy went to visit her son, she noticed the house was in a state of upheaval. When pointed out, Mario brushed it off, saying he had been busy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cindy helped him to get organized and together they worked on redecorating the house, a project Mario wanted to begin. Later, he told his mother that he was having trouble paying his bills. When she went over to help him, she found that he was making plenty of money, saving appropriately and was overall on track financially. He was just not making the payments. She helped him set up auto payments for his bills.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shortly after, she noticed projects being left unfinished around the house. Mario stated, \u201cI just can\u2019t finish it.\u201d She voiced her concern that something else might be going on, Mario assured her he was fine. And for the rest of the year, he seemingly was.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"247\" class=\" wp-image-7817 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/IT-help-for-Grams-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/>\u201cI even told my mom one day, I said, \u2018oh my gosh, Mario is really turning the corner, you know, you start having these conversations about adulthood and just getting out of that, you know, crazy boy age and college kind of age,\u201d Cindy said. \u201cIt was about a year from [then] that he called me in again and he&#8217;s like \u2018I don&#8217;t know, something\u2019s going on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe knew something was wrong.\u201d He had ringing in his ears and memory loss, among other symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Doms-Best-man-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"220\" class=\" wp-image-7811 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Doms-Best-man-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Doms-Best-man-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Doms-Best-man-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Doms-Best-man.jpg 1368w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/>Over time his personality had changed too. \u201cThis super funny and intelligent person you would be in a conversation with could switch to a defensive, \u2018why are you picking on me?\u2019 person,\u201d Cindy remembered.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She told him that it\u2019s hard to live life when you feel that badly and together, they began setting up doctor\u2019s appointments for Mario to receive help and seek answers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About a month after setting up these appointments, he took his own life, completely shocking his family, friends, and those who knew him.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"407\" class=\" wp-image-7826 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Summers-at-the-beach.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBut that&#8217;s what really pushes me to think something was going on with him,\u201d Cindy said. \u201cAnd we just never got a chance to find out what it was.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Though Mario lived a short life, it was an impactful one. In the receiving line at his visitation, hundreds attended, and Cindy was moved by the support and stories shared. One young man shared a simple sentiment that summed up Mario\u2019s personality well. When Cindy asked how he knew Mario, he said, \u201cI don\u2019t really know him. Every day in middle school he would wave and say hi to me. That\u2019s why I came.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cindy is thankful for Mario\u2019s friends and fellow firefighters; they still call and check in on her. His friends and family, including older brother Dominic, sister-in-law Amber, and their children, still gather to honor him yearly. His cousin started holding a Be Kind walk every spring. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"308\" class=\" wp-image-7815 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Gramps-was-always-Marios-best-man-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>After Mario\u2019s passing, donations began coming in immediately and his family started a fund with their Community Foundation. In the last few years, they have funded scholarships and donated to organizations that support first responders and other related causes. Now Cindy is hoping to help support CTE research. Brain health research is very important to their family, as she lost her father to Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When it comes to CTE, she recognizes the importance of spreading awareness. \u201cThey need to know it is real,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t only happen to professional football players and military [members].\u201d Cindy is supportive of our recent efforts to recruit more first responders into our UNITE Brain Bank, so that we can better understand the long-term effects of firefighting on brain health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Cousins-396x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"250\" class=\" wp-image-7809 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Cousins-396x300.jpg 396w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Cousins-768x581.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/files\/2023\/09\/Cousins.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/>\u201cMaybe if I had more awareness of the long-term effects or potential, down the road, signs to look for.\u2026\u201d she said. \u201cThat&#8217;s the hard part, right? The concussions were in high school. We&#8217;re now [dealing with the symptoms] at twenty-four [years old]. So, it just doesn&#8217;t happen overnight.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also wants others to know there is no shame in getting help.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAwareness, I think, is the biggest thing,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel that we can make an impact.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>If you or anyone you know is struggling with mental health symptoms and\/or considering suicide, please know there is help available.
