Also making fundamental contributions to research on distributed databases. He managed the development of the OSI reference model, naming and addressing, and a major contributor to the upper-layer architecture. He was a major contributor to the development of network management architecture, working in the area since 1984 and building and deploying LAN products and a network management system, a decade ahead of comparable systems. Mr. Day has published Patterns in Network Architecture: A Return to Fundamentals (Prentice Hall, 2008), which has been characterized (embarrassingly) as “the most important book on network protocols in general and the Internet in particular ever written.” The book analyzes the fundamental flaws in the Internet and proposes what appears to be the only path forward. Today Mr. Day splits his time between making this new path a reality and teaching at Boston University. Mr. Day is also a recognized scholar in the history of cartography focusing on 17thC China, and is past President of the Boston Map Society.

<h3 class="bu_collapsible" aria-expanded="false"tabindex="0" role="button">Courses

MET CS 535 Computer Networks

MET CS 575 Operating Systems

MET CS 635 Network Design and Implementation

MET CS 775 Advanced Networking

<h3 class="bu_collapsible" aria-expanded="false"tabindex="0" role="button">Research Interests

Computing systems architecture

Naming and addressing

Distributed Systems

Congestion Management

Distributed Resource Allocation

Improving the Efficiency of Insights

<h3 class="bu_collapsible" aria-expanded="false"tabindex="0" role="button">Scholarly Works

Books

Patterns in Network Architecture: A Return to Fundamentals (Prentice Hall, 2008).

Articles

“The Clamor Outside as INWG Debated: Economic War Comes to Networking.” IEEE Annals of the History of Computing 38, no. 3 (July–September 2016).

“18th Century Intrigue: The Dutch Pirate a French Atlas Leaked from the Imperial Court of China.” Book review of Jesuit Mapmaking in China: D’Anville’s ‘Nouvelle Atlas de la Chine’ (1737) in Imago Mundi 67, no. 2 (2015): 248–249.

“Be Careful What You Wish For: Caution on Net Neutrality.” High Tech Forum, November 2014.

“Edizioni a stampa e copie manoscritte delle carte geografiche di Matteo Ricci.” In La Cartografia di Matteo Ricci, edited by Filippo Mignini (Libreria dello Stato, Istituto poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, 2013): 5–34.

“The Mappa Mundi of Matteo Ricci.” Miscellanea Bibliothecae Apostolicae Vaticanae VI: Collectanea in Honorem Rev.Mi Patris Leonardi E.
