Boston University Department of Computer Science Assistant Professor <\/span>Charalampos (Babis) Tsourakakis<\/span><\/a> and his colleague, Professor <\/span>U Kang<\/span><\/a> (Seoul National University), in collaboration with Professor <\/span>Christos Faloutsos<\/span><\/a> (Carnegie Mellon University) have won the <\/span>2018 <\/span>IEEE ICDM Test-of-Time Award<\/b> for their 2009 paper <\/span>PEGASUS: A Peta-Scale Graph Mining System \u2013 Implementation and Observations<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Carnegie Mellon \u2013 The Carnegie Mellon Database Group is pleased to announce that their 2009 paper <\/span>PEGASUS: A Peta-Scale Graph Mining System \u2013 Implementation and Observations<\/span><\/a> has won the 2018 <\/span>IEEE ICDM Test-of-Time Award<\/b>. The authors were CMU Ph.D. students <\/span>U Kang<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Charalampos Tsourakakis<\/span><\/a>, in collaboration with <\/span>Prof. Christos Faloutsos<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This paper on the <\/span>PEGASUS<\/span><\/a> project showed how to apply graph-mining algorithms on a Map-Reduce platform. The main insight was that a wide range of graph mining algorithms eventually require <\/span>generalized iterated matrix-vector multiplications<\/span><\/i> (GIMV), which can be efficiently implemented on Hadoop, as well as on SQL. It had already attracted the runner-up award for Best Application Paper in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n

The current award recognizes high-impact ICDM papers, and the award ceremony will be during the <\/span>ICDM\u201918<\/span><\/a> Banquet on November 19th in Singapore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. U Kang is now faculty at Seoul National University, and Prof. Charalampos Tsourakakis is faculty at Boston University.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
