The report, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencecoalition.org\/successstories\/\"><em>American-Made Innovation Sparking Economic Growth<\/em><\/a>, documents the ways that this company and others are bringing to market transformational innovations in areas ranging from health care to defense and are contributing to US job creation and economic growth. The report\u2019s release coincides with Congressional consideration of funding for America\u2019s science agencies, which is threatened by cuts proposed by the Trump administration, including a reduction of 18.3 percent, or about $5.8 billion, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> (NIH)\u00a0budget.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2017\/science-coalition-federal-funding-sparks-innovation\/\">BU Today:<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10369\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cs\/files\/2017\/06\/Anukool-Lakhina-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Anukool Lakhina (CAS\u201901, GRS\u201901,\u201907), CEO &amp; Founder of Guavus, Inc.\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/files\/2017\/06\/Anukool-Lakhina-2.jpeg 190w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/files\/2017\/06\/Anukool-Lakhina-2-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anukool Lakhina (CAS\u201901, GRS\u201901,\u201907), CEO &amp; Founder of Guavus, Inc.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The third BU company cited in the Science Coalition report is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guavus.com\">Guavus, Inc.<\/a>, which was founded by Anukool Lakhina (CAS\u201901, GRS\u201901,\u201907) and grew out of his work as a BU doctoral student under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.bu.edu\/fac\/crovella\/\">Mark Crovella<\/a>, a College of Arts &amp; Sciences professor of computer science. That research\u2014and additional work by BU researchers that led to the founding of Guavas\u2014was supported by about $6 million in funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/\">Office of Naval Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\">National Science Foundation<\/a>. Lakhina, winner of a Computer Science Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015, is the CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guavus.com\/\">Guavus<\/a>, based in San Mateo, Calif. The company develops data analysis platforms and applications that enable companies to process high-volume streaming data for business analytics and engineering; it has more than 400 employees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cGuavus pioneered big-data analytics before the emergence of data science,\u201d says Crovella, a member of the company\u2019s technical advisory board. \u201cAnukool Lakhina\u2019s PhD thesis benefited from cross-disciplinary collaboration between BU\u2019s departments of computer science and statistics, and the power of the resulting methods he developed led directly to the founding of Guavus. Its success has been a testament to the way that federally funded basic research attacks problems before they become mainstream, and thereby drives innovation.
