{"id":10363,"date":"2017-06-08T10:40:01","date_gmt":"2017-06-08T14:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/?p=10363"},"modified":"2020-03-18T15:16:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T19:16:26","slug":"abbas-attarwala-changing-computer-science-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/2017\/06\/08\/abbas-attarwala-changing-computer-science-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Abbas Attarwala Changing Computer Science Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/edtech\/2017\/02\/09\/success-story-microsoft-onenote-changing-computer-science-learning\/\">BU Educational Technology article<\/a>, Professor Abbas Attarwala describes how he has been using novel and creative methods in his teaching.\u00a0 It\u2019s quite interesting and inspiring!<\/p>\n<p>From the article:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span>\u201cI like my classrooms to be interactive and I try and make the learning experience of my students nonlinear,\u201d says Attarwala. \u201cI do use slides in my lecture, however slides are static and on many occasions important content is not easily understood by students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[&#8230;] Additionally, last semester Attarwala introduced \u201cworkshops\u201d to his CS 131 syllabus. The workshops take place once a month for one to two\u00a0hours, and Attarwala uses them to teach students an advanced topic or new technology in math or computer science. Students can gain a greater perspective on the course material, as well as add their knowledge of computer science and mathematics technologies like Haskell, Prolog, Git, or LaTeX to their CV.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span>\u201cI am very fortunate that my BU students are so passionate and have responded well to these workshops,\u201d says Attarwala.
