Our internationally renowned faculty are as active in their research fields as they are engaged with their students in the classroom. Students quickly gain expertise with basic techniques and methods needed to research the technical literature in search of a solution\u2014or to devise new methods\u2014when confronted with a challenging design, implementation, or theory problem. Our wide-ranging curriculum offers many opportunities for hands-on experience as well, allowing students to participate in the development of new systems or in cutting-edge research projects led by our faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students wishing to focus their studies in computer science have the option to specialize in either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/masters\/program\/cs\/program\/cyber-security\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyber security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/masters\/program\/cs\/program\/data-centric\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data-centric computing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Requirements<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight CS courses (32 credits) approved for graduate study are required. Of the eight courses required, five courses must fulfill the core program <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/masters\/program\/cs\/program\/ms-breadth-requirements\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breadth requirements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with at least one in each of the following areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theory<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Software<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applications\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remaining three courses can be fulfilled by any graduate-level CS course of interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are expected to achieve a grade of B- or better in all graduate level courses that count towards the 32 degree credit requirement. In addition, <\/span><b>among the grades received for the five breadth courses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number of grades of B\u2013 must not be greater than the number of grades of B+ or higher. No grade lower than B\u2013 may be used for graduate credit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the eight required courses for the MS CS degree, students must take five (breadth requirement) courses, three of which satisfy the CS core and two of which satisfy the Specialization requirements of the student\u2019s CS program track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>MS in CS Core Breadth Requirements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must be satisfied by all students pursuing an MS in CS, inclusive of specialization. This core requirement covers the three areas of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">software<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systems,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students can satisfy each area of the core with any graduate level CS course that is applicable. However, it is recommended that the CS core be satisfied with the courses that have been explicitly designed to form the core CS foundation for Master\u2019s students, specifically:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Software: GRS CS 611 *recommended*<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theory: GRS CS 630 *recommended*<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Systems: A choice of:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 551\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 552<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 561<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GRS CS 651<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GRS CS 654<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GRS CS 655<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students wishing to satisfy a core area with a different course, other than the course recommended, have the option to do so with the approval of their CS advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*With advisor permission, other courses that can satisfy, the <\/span><b>Software<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requirement are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 511<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 520<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 525<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and, the <\/span><b>Theory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requirement are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 530<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 531<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 535<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAS CS 537\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the three course CS Core requirement, students must complete at least <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional courses specific to degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>General CS track<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who are in the general CS track, should take at least one additional course in the breadth area of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">applications<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The fulfillment of the applications requirement can be completed with a wide array of courses in the Department of Computer Science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any application related graduate level CS course satisfies the applications requirement. However, any course that is applicable for the Cybersecurity or Data Centric computing specialization or any course applicable for the MS in AI program, is recommended and will automatically fulfill this requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remainder of the general MS degree is elective courses. Students in the general degree program can tailor their elective courses with a choice of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any graduate-level course in the Department of Computer Science (CAS CS 500-599 or GRS CS 600-999)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graduate-level courses in other departments (with approval):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Mathematics &amp; Statistics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College of Engineering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questrom School of Business<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Thesis<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not required for (non-PhD) students accepted into the Master&#8217;s Program. MS students have the option of augmenting their degree with a research-based thesis. A Master\u2019s thesis is carried out with the approval of, and under the supervision of, a computing faculty or affiliated faculty member.
