Changes will be reflected timely on this webpage.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updated: February 25, 2026<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container  bu_collapsible_open\" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Degree Requirements<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" ><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Important Semester Dates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students are expected to be aware of semester dates, as outlined on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/calendars\/semester\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registrar\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students should pay particular attention to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last day to add a class<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last day to drop a class without a \u201cW\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last day to drop a class with a \u201cW\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student drops a class with a W, this class will show up on their transcript with a \u201cW\u201d instead of a grade. The class will not impact the student\u2019s GPA.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any schedule changes due to University-observed holidays (e.g. substituting a Monday schedule on a Tuesday, due to a Monday holiday).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Petitioning to Transfer Credits: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are allowed to transfer up to 32.0 credits from relevant, graduate-level courses earned at accredited institutions towards their BU degree credit requirement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/phd-and-mfa-academics\/transfer-credits\/\">request webform to GRS<\/a>. Then, they will receive a notification that the request has been received and sent to the Director of Graduate Studies and the Program Administrator. The Program Administrator, and Director of Graduate Studies will confirm with GRS if the petition is approved.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This process is separate from requesting to waive a breadth course requirement. See Breadth Course Requirements, below.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Breadth Course Requirement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Satisfied by completing six graduate courses that carry breadth-requirement PhD credit.\u00a0 Three courses\u00a0 need to be from three different\u00a0 areas among Algorithms, Software, Systems, and Theory. One course needs to be from one area among Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Cryptography and Security, and Data Mining and Data Management. The remaining two classes can be taken from any of the following areas: Algorithms, Software, Systems, Theory, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, Cryptography and Security, and Data Mining and Data Management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breadth waiver petitions must be sent to the Director of Graduate Studies, who will coordinate the review and approval with the appropriate research group.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/phd-program\/phd-program-milestones\/phd-program-breadth\/\" class=\"button\"><strong>Breadth Requirement Details<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Other Course Information:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> GRS requires a minimum of 64.0 credits to earn a PhD degree. PhD students are allowed to earn credits towards the degree requirement with courses from CS, and relevant fields like Math, Engineering, CDS, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.0 credit courses do not count towards the degree requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Directed Study Courses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PhD students can be registered for a graduate directed study course with their advisor, or any other faculty they are working with, each semester for at least 4.0 credits. A student can be registered for up to 12.0 credits of directed study in each semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Directed Study Advisor must be a faculty member from the CAS Department of Computer Science, the CAS Department of Mathematics &amp; Statistics, or the ENG Department of Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering, or the Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directed study courses taken to count towards the degree requirements must be taken for 4.0 credits and receive a letter grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course requirements and grading are determined between the student and their Directed Study Advisor.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Grade Requirement:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Courses taken towards the PhD degree must receive a grade of B- or higher to count.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the breadth requirements, the number of B- grades must not exceed the number of grades of B+ or higher, and the overall GPA in the breadth classes need to be 3.5 or higher.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pass\/Fail grades (P\/F) are not allowed for any regular 4.0 credit course taken toward the PhD degree in Computer Science other than a directed study.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Good Academic Standing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Per the GRS Bulletin, good academic standing is required to remain enrolled in the program and retain the GRS Scholarship. Specific requirements to remain in good academic standing include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have no more than two failing or W grades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet all milestones of the degree, such as comprehensive exams, subject qualifying exams, and dissertation prospectus, on the schedule specified by the program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet all milestones of the degree with sufficient quality of work as specified by the program.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full policy can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/good-academic-standing\/%C2%A0\">read here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Degree Milestones and Tentative Timeline of a PhD Student:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breadth Requirements: at most 6 semesters (3 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualifying Depth Exam: at most 6 semesters (3 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualifying Oral Exam: at most 8 semesters (4 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dissertation Prospectus: at most 10 semesters (5 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Dissertation Defense: at most 12 semesters (6 years)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cs\/phd-program\/phd-program-milestones\/subject-exams\/\" class=\"button\">Qualifying Exam Details<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/phd-and-mfa-academics\/graduation-information\/\" class=\"button\">GRS PhD Graduation Requirements<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Degree Requirements from GRS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students are expected to be aware of and meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/phd-degree-requirements\/%C2%A0\">degree requirements of GRS<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/phd-degree-requirements\/\" class=\"button\"><strong>GRS Degree Requirement Details<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Earning an MS degree in PhD Program:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students may obtain a MS degree during their time in the PhD program. Students must complete the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of a minimum of 32 credits, as required by GRS to obtain a MS degree<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Completion of the PhD breadth requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, candidates shall demonstrate their abilities for independent study in the form of a master\u2019s thesis that describes either original research or a comprehensive study that demonstrates mastery of a technical topic in CS. The thesis will be evaluated by an academic committee who will also perform an oral examination where the candidates will demonstrate mastery of the material presented in the master\u2019s thesis. The master\u2019s thesis work can be used as a foundation for a future PhD thesis; however, research described in the master\u2019s thesis cannot be counted as original research toward fulfillment of the PhD requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Tentative Time to Completion:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students should complete their MS degree within three years after their first semester of registration.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Non-Degree-Related Courses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During any given semester, a student may not take non-degree-related courses covered by the GRS Scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PDP and language courses do not count towards the degree requirement and the tuition for these courses are not covered by the GRS Scholarship.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Non-Degree-Related Course Exceptions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PDP courses can be registered for if you are registered for 12.0 credits of regular degree courses. This can be achieved by registering for a directed study.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>MS Graduation Requirements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students who wish to obtain the MS degree must submit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/academics\/ma-ms-academics\/graduation-information\/grs-intent-to-graduate-for-a-masters-degree\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intent to Graduate Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the master\u2019s thesis by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/current-students\/ma-and-ms-students\/graduation-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deadlines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as set forth by the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences. Students should contact the International Students &amp; Scholars Office (ISSO) with any questions.\u00a0 ISSO has an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/contact\/isso-advisor-on-call-for-student\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advisor-on-call<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any quick questions. They encourage<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/contact\/appointment-scheduling-for-students\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scheduling a Zoom appointment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for any lengthy or complex questions. Please see the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/contact\/student-advising\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">student advising assignments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and include your UID in all communications with ISSO.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Maintaining Full-Time Status:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As part of their visa requirements, International Students must maintain full-time status every semester. Full-time status means a student is taking 12.0 or more credits in each semester. However, doctoral students are manually certified as full-time each semester, regardless of credit amount being taken each semester, as long as the student is registered each semester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 0.0-credit research course Continuing Study will count as registered full-time for doctoral students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International students are not allowed to withdraw from classes if this would cause them to fall below the 12.0 credit minimum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to drop courses from your schedule, please contact your program administrator.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>CPT\/OPT and Student Visa Requirements<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International students should be aware of their Student Visa requirements <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> engaging in any kind of off-campus employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All applications must be made through the International Students &amp; Scholars Office (ISSO). You must read carefully through ISSO\u2019s instructions for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/student-off-campus-work-and-training\/curricular-practical-training-cpt-f-1\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/student-off-campus-work-and-training\/optional\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>CPT:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PhD students are only eligible for CPT that is &#8220;required for thesis\/dissertation completion,&#8221; and must request authorization from the ISSO to work at an internship that is integral to their degree progress during the academic year (fall and spring semesters) and summer terms. Students may be expected to register as \u201ccontinuing study\u201d status for the semester of the CPT.\u00a0 ISSO will check that students are registered in the course number that is equivalent to continuing study status.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASCS 981 when enrolled in other courses under 12 credits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASCS 985 when enrolled in zero credits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CASSR 988S for Summer Research<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will be expected to provide the ISSO with a letter signed by their faculty advisor on department letterhead with an explanation of the research objectives of the internship placement as they relate to the student\u2019s dissertation and why they cannot be accomplished using Boston University facilities. A DGS co-signature is required. Please initially reach out to the <a href=\"mailto:csphd@bu.edu\">Program Administrator<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cApproval\u201d section of the ISSO CPT request should be directed to the faculty advisor for review and will be automatically assigned to your ISSO student advisor for processing.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>OPT: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process is completed entirely with ISSO. Students should reach out to the program administrator if any documents are required from the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Other Relevant Policies<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Change of Advisor<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are encouraged to contact the Director of Graduate Studies to discuss their options. Students who decide to proceed with a change of advisor need to coordinate with the CS program administrator (<\/span><a href=\"mailto:csphd@bu.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">csphd@bu.edu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the Director of Graduate Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should notify the department about your new advisor who agrees to formally serve as your thesis advisor. A thesis advisor will work with the CS admin to indicate and provide service funding for you each semester. They will also serve as your first reader on your final defense committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your thesis advisor is a CS affiliated faculty member, you will need to identify a CS tenured\/tenure-track faculty member who agrees to serve as your point of contact in CS and potentially as a second or third reader on your final defense committee. The purpose of having a CS tenured\/tenure track faculty as a point of contact is to also assist in tracking your CS PhD degree milestones that may be different from the affiliated faculty member\u2019s primary department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Leave of Absence, Withdrawal, Childbirth and Adoption Accommodation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please review GRS&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/withdrawal-leave-of-absence-and-reinstatement\/%C2%A0\">Leave of Absence, Withdrawal, Childbirth and Adoption accommodation policy<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Information on the PAS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each December you will receive a Student Self-Assessment Report (also referred to as the PAS)\u00a0 to complete regarding your last calendar year. The deadline will be specified when you receive the self-assessment form. Completing this self-assessment is mandatory for all CS PhD students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CS faculty and related affiliated faculty will convene in the spring semester to review each CS PhD student\u2019s progress from the previous academic year or since the time they joined the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this meeting, you will receive a letter from the department that describes whether you are in good academic standing or if there are concerns about your degree progress and further instruction on next steps. Expressed concerns about your degree progress do not result in automatic program dismissal. Your academic standing will be monitored by your advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.
